Cavalier Dollars for Scholars History: Cavalier Area Dollars for Scholars began in 1981. Since that time, DFS has helped over 150 Cavalier High School students pursue their academic dreams.

Mission Statement
Cavalier Area Dollars for Scholars is a community-based scholarship organization, managed by a board of local volunteers who raise funds from the community to support local Cavalier, ND high school students. Cavalier DFS awards Cavalier High School graduates with Named Scholarships, General DFS Scholarships, Class Fund Scholarships, and the Graduate Scholarship. Named Scholarships: DFS is honored to award the following named scholarships each school year: Edward & Bessie Thomson Scholarship, Maida Stark Memorial Scholarship, Wayne Jenson Scholarship, Richard & Ellyn Halldorson Scholarship, Everett C. Hillman Memorial Scholarship, Gladys Tupa Memorial Scholarship, Carl & Helen Berg Scholarship, and Jack Mayo Scholarship. Our next featured scholarship is the Gladys Tupa Scholarship!

The Paul and Sharon Opportunity Fund awards this scholarship annually in memory of Gladys Tupa, who taught in Cavalier for many years. This scholarship recognizes a Cavalier High School graduate who has achieved average or better grades through hard work and determination.

This year’s recipient is Owen Crosby.

Owen is attending North Dakota State University, where he is pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering.

Our next featured scholarship is the Carl and Helen Berg Scholarship!

This annual scholarship was established to support Cavalier High School students as they continue their education and to recognize outstanding student achievement.

This year’s recipient is Mallory Kemp.

Mallory was selected in recognition of her involvement in extracurricular activities, strong academic achievement, and excellent work habits throughout her high school career.

Congratulations to Mallory as she heads to Montana State University, where she will pursue a degree in engineering.

Our next featured scholarship is the Edward and Bessie Thomson Scholarship!

This annual scholarship was established by the family of Ed and Bessie Thomson to support Cavalier High School graduates as they continue their education.

This year’s recipient is Addi Manley.

Addi is continuing her education at the University of North Dakota, where she plans to pursue a degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders.

Our next featured scholarship is the Ella Wisenthal Scholarship!

Ella Hudson Wisenthal was born in 1911 near Hamilton and devoted her life to education. After earning a two-year teaching degree from Mayville State Teachers College, she taught all eight grades at the rural Bruce School #22 for many years.

A passionate reader, Ella filled her home with books and inspired a love of literature in her family. She was also known for her excellent penmanship and dedication to the Palmer Method of writing.

This scholarship has been awarded to two recipients, Delaney Denault and Remi Larson, in recognition of their drive, determination, and academic achievement.

Delaney plans to attend North Dakota State University to pursue Radiological Sciences.
Remi plans to attend Northland Community & Technical College to become a Physical Therapy Assistant.

Our next featured scholarship is the Maida Stark Scholarship!

The Maida Stark Scholarship honors the life and legacy of Maida Stark, an exceptionally dedicated employee of Mayo Construction, where she served as bookkeeper and office manager. After 44 years of service, she retired and continued to contribute her time and talents for more than 20 years by maintaining personal business records for the Mayo family and volunteering at the Cavalier Thrift Store.

Maida was also a familiar face in the Cavalier School gym, rarely missing home games, band concerts, or choir performances. She passed away in May 2020, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, integrity, and community service that continues to inspire what it means to be a small-town role model.

This year’s recipient is Mallory Kemp. She was selected in recognition of her strong commitment to community service and volunteerism.

Mallory plans to attend Montana State University in Bozeman, where she will pursue a degree in engineering.

This annual scholarship was established by the Halldorson family in honor of Richard and Ellyn Halldorson. It is awarded to a student pursuing further education in agriculture, education, business, or medicine.

This year’s recipient of this scholarship is Maddy Steele!

Maddy plans to attend North Dakota State University to further her education in an agriculture-related field. We wish her the very best as she continues her educational journey and pursues her future career goals.

The Jack and Beverly Mayo Scholarship is awarded to a Cavalier High School senior who demonstrates qualities of ambition, a high degree of dependability, ethics, and respect.

Recipients are selected through a scholarship application process that considers academic achievement, volunteer and community involvement, letters of recommendation, and student essays. This year's recipient is Owen Crosby.

Owen plans to further his education at North Dakota State University, where he will pursue a degree in Civil Engineering.

Congratulations to Devi Murray, recipient of the Everett Hillman Scholarship!

This scholarship was established by the Hillman family through the Lutheran Community Foundation and is awarded to a Cavalier High School graduating senior pursuing an education in nursing or medicine.

Devi plans to pursue a nursing degree through Northland Community & Technical College. We are excited to see where her passion for healthcare takes her and wish her the very best in her future studies.

Congratulations to the Cavalier High School Class of 2026 scholarship recipients!

Thanks to the hard work of our students through class fundraisers and the generous support of contributors to the Cavalier Dollars for Scholars general fund, every senior who applied received scholarship support to help with their future educational goals.

This year's applicants were:

Together, these students were awarded a total of $32,694 in scholarships through class funds, the Cavalier Dollars for Scholars general fund, and the many named scholarships generously established by local families and supporters.

We are proud of these graduates and excited to support them as they take the next step in their education!
