In 1995, Pete Lund came back to FDNY Rescue 2 in Brooklyn, the unit he'd started with years earlier before making lieutenant. He'd already spent 11 years running Rescue 3 in the Bronx by then. Guys who worked with him called him "The Vulcan," and at Rescue 2 he built a name specifically in rope rescue, confined space work, and scuba — the kind of jobs that don't show up on the news much but that somebody has to know how to do.
This looks like one of those jobs: Lund and a Rescue 2 member coming up out of a shaft, some kind of confined-space or tunnel job in Queens, foam or ice packed around them, sometime in the mid-1990s by the caption. I couldn't dig up the specific incident this photo is from, so I can't confirm the date or exact circumstances beyond what's given here — but it fits squarely with the work Rescue 2 sent him to do in that stretch of his career.
Lund retired from the FDNY in 2003 after thirty years, then kept going as a volunteer back home in Woodmere, where his father had served 75 years before him. He died on June 14, 2005, at 54, of a heart attack right after knocking down a house fire as a Woodmere volunteer. "If you could think of something bad that happened in the last 30 years, Pete was probably there," his old captain at Rescue 2 said afterward.
