Leaders must be present. This isn’t to say they must be helicoptering around the crew constantly, teetering dangerously on the edge of micromanaging. Rather they must be constantly in tune with the attitudes and energy of the crew and be ready to step in and offer guidance, counsel, and hold people accountable when necessary. The best leaders monitor the mood of the group and know when to put their foot on the gas and when to give people needed space, and rest. They are sure too be present around the station, the drill grounds, and they find opportunities to coach team members one on one. Short burst leadership is short lived. The long game is where relationships are forged.
