If you go to the 0:54 mark of this great video by Fort Ticonderoga, you'll see members of the Continental Army pulling down a "massive, two-ton gilded lead" statue of King George III in NYC upon learning of the Declaration of Independence in the summer of 1776. This is, of course, a recreation of that moment using some clever camera magic and a six-inch high model of the statue created and printed in resin in the Castleton Innovation Lab. Since the statue was broken up and melted down shortly after being pulled down, we recreated it by digitally merging an equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelias with the head from a different statue of King George III. Seeing how Fort Ti used it to recreate this iconic moment is great fun!

The story below highlights the recent recovery from Lake Champlain of the last piece of the cannon that exploded during the Battle of Valcour Island in the Revolutionary War. We scanned all the other fragments of the cannon at the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum this spring and then 3D-printed 1:1 scale copies on our Elegoo OrangeStorm Giga large-format printer. This was a great test of our large-format printing skills. We'll post some photos of process soon, as well as the 3D models.

The Anthropology, Archaeology, and Geography program's very own Dr. Ellen Spensley Moriarty was this year's winner of the Jennifer and Fred Bagley Endowed Part-time Faculty award, given each year at the VTSU-Castleton graduation. The award celebrated Dr. Moriarty's rich contributions in archaeological research, her ongoing direction of archaeological investigations and outreach at Granger House, her innovative teaching, and her rich record of inspiring students to study archaeology here and in graduate school. This award was richly deserved and reflects her critical role in our program!

Saturday was joyous and bittersweet as we said our fond farewells to the 2026 graduates of the Anthropology, Archaeology, and Geography program: River Rozum, Clay Barcelos, Eamonn Offutt, Colin Kemper, James Sanborn, Alexis Martindate, Cassia Harting-Smith, and Luigi Travaglini. We wish them all great success and hope they will keep us updated on their adventures!

We're in the news! Thank you to WCAX for stopping by our lab. The work we do in the Castleton Innovation Lab is part of VTSU's 3D Technology program, with courses across the university. Also, make sure you check out our 3D Technology Summer Institute - https://vermontstate.edu/3d-technology-summer-institute/ - Vermont students can attend for up to 6 weeks and get academic credits with their costs covered by a state scholarship. This year, we are also accepting out-of-state students for the first time.

VTSU students across disciplines are building their futures with hands-on learning in 3D printing.
