Play really is enough.

Yes, children will need to learn academics, listen and sit still. But that certainly doesn’t mean that these lessons should be straight-jacketed onto them in the toddler and preschool years. In fact, the funneling down of structured learning is all the more reason to let children play while they can. We must fiercely protect this precious, ever shrinking window of time for our children.⁠

We had a great day singing our good morning songs, the ABCs and our 123’s. We read the book called Stormy night. Then we all painted raindrops and talked about where the rain comes from.

Toddlers want to do things themselves, and when we slow down and prioritize their active participation, the holidays can belong to them, too. ⁠

This means keeping an eye out for things toddlers can do, or at least try to do. It means letting go of results and preconceived notions, allowing all the ornaments to be clumped in a foot long section at the bottom of the tree, not minding it when grandma hears all about her new bedroom slippers beforehand (because our toddler helped us wrap them), realizing that other things we thought mattered really don’t ✨💛 ✨

It’s our job to meet their needs. 💁🏼‍♀️

Behavior isn’t the problem. Unmet needs are.

This season is full of excitement, overstimulation, transitions, changes in routine, and big emotions for kids and adults. What looks like misbehavior is often a child trying to communicate a need they don’t have the skills or words to express.

When we shift our lens from “What is wrong with this behavior?” to “What does this child need right now?” everything changes.
Connection becomes possible.
Support becomes effective.
And behavior becomes easier to understand.

Every child is unique and different when it comes to handwriting. However, here are some stages that may be helpful when looking at a child's writing milestones:

In this article, you will discover skills to practice for each performance milestone, such as:

1️⃣ Offering crayons and paper frequently for consistent exposure to handwriting tools
2️⃣ Build their muscle strength in their hands and fingers by offering squeeze bottles to grip
3️⃣ Provide many opportunities for writing and coloring with different utensils like chalk, markers, dry erase boards and many other options.
4️⃣ Use tracing sheets with numbers and letters. Continue building hand strength by offering play dough to play with.
