Is this a pile of books, mess of books, passel of books, abundance of books, flock of books, or a harvest of books? How might a poet describe the photo? Find out by reading, Soil, Water, Soul…

INTRODUCING the debut poetry anthology from Crowder College students, Soil, Water, Soul. Cool Fact: The book was born at Crowder, Cassville! Two students were brave enough to introduce their own poetry in an Intro to Literature class, and the spark was lit. Poetry Ain’t Dead is now a monthly event across all Crowder campuses.
Stop by the Crowder bookstore to buy a copy or visit the Crowder library to check out a copy. Copies are also available for purchase at Amazon.com.

Crowder College President Chett Daniel (l) introducing the two Walt Whitman Scholarship recipients to our Roughrider nation; Dakota Sulffridge (center) and Jessi Hilton (r). Dakota and Jessi have been long time participants in the Poetry Ain’t Dead events since its inception in 2024 and then applied for the Walt Whitman Scholarship. Congratulations to Dakota and Jessi but also to the many scholarship winners at Crowder this academic year.

Scholarships at Crowder play a pivotal role in student success. Nearly $350,000 was distributed last year and over 300 unique scholarships awarded. Our scholarships drive local economic retention, supports first-gen students, alleviates hidden costs, reduces reliance on student loans and provides holistic community support. We are proud of our students and appreciate the ongoing support of The Crowder Foundation and the many people and organizations who support our student’s journey to success.

Daisy Alvarado, Crowder Cassville nursing student, submitted a poem in the Poetry Ain’t Dead (PAD) event in September and won a very cool sling bag. Her poem, “Catching a Moment with Amaris” is a beautiful example of a haiku. PAD events continue in October and November, the 22nd of each month are the deadline dates for each month. Simply email, [email protected] and you could win a $25 gift certificate for top prize, or a sling bag just for submitting.
All participants will have their poem published in an end of the year poetry anthology, and become eligible for the $1500 Walt Whitman Scholarship awarded for the fall of 2027.

Catching a Moment with Amaris
Big brown eyes I see
Both little hands reach for me
Smile catches laughter
