This is so sad and unfortunate. What this mom says about her child’s vertical posture is correct. This is not a desired posture for swimming, and the puddle jumper also provides the child with a false sense of security.

A study conducted by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in 2009 found that children who participated in swim lessons had an 88 percent reduced risk of drowning.

Learning to swim is an additional layer of protection against unintentional drownings.

Wherever there is water there is the chance of drowning.

Most fatal drownings of children uner 15 years of age occur in home swimming pools. according to the CDC drowning is responsible for more deaths among children 1-4 than any other cause except congenital anomalies (birth defects).
