Today, we pause to remember two anniversaries that will forever hold deep meaning for our community and our profession.

25 years ago, our nation was forever changed by the tragic events of September 11th. On that day, 343 firefighters made the ultimate sacrifice, running toward danger to save others — a profound act of courage and commitment to their oath. In the years since, many more have lost their lives to illnesses stemming from that day, and the toll continues to rise. The weight of those losses is carried in the hearts of all who remember.

12 years ago today, our own community suffered a heartbreaking loss with the passing of Captain Jeff Atkinson, who succumbed to job-related cancer. Jeff's strength, determination, and dedication stood as a testament to the bravery that firefighters embody every single day. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the example he set. His sacrifice, like that of so many others, will never be forgotten.

As we reflect on these anniversaries, we would like to share with you a gift given to us by the Bay to Brooklyn team. This group of active and retired Firefighters biked across the country stopping at fire departments along the way. The flag they were carrying was signed by every firefighter along the way and will be given to Station 10 in New York today. Your Casper Firefighters also received a piece of steel that was a part of the beams that held up the towers. The Bay to Brooklyn team carried a backpack full of of these, sharing the burden between team members, and carrying the weight of sacrifice on their shoulders.
