Help shape the future of the Wyoming Arts Council.

Next week, the Wyoming Arts Council will host three virtual public focus groups as part of its ongoing strategic planning process. Building on feedback gathered through the recent public engagement survey, these conversations will give participants an opportunity to explore ideas, challenges and priorities in greater depth.

Each 90-minute session will focus on a specific area of the Arts Council’s work:

Individual Artist Support
Monday, Sept. 14 | Noon–1:30 p.m.

Arts Education
Monday, Sept. 14 | 4–5:30 p.m.

Grants
Wednesday, Sept. 16 | Noon–1:30 p.m.

The focus groups are open to the public. Participants are encouraged to join the conversation most relevant to their interests or experience.

Congratulations Ashley!

1,600 artists applied. Only one was selected — and it was UW’s own Ashley Hope Carlisle! 👀😏

Professor Ashley Hope Carlisle, sculpture faculty in the Department of Visual Arts, has been commissioned to create a permanent public art installation, "Small Wonders: Seeds of Transformation," for the Denver Botanic Gardens. Carlisle was selected as one of just four artists chosen from 1,600 national applicants in a year-long selection process, with the contract signed in June 2026. The piece is slated for completion and installation by end of April 2028 at one of the most-visited public gardens in the country, which drew over 1.46 million visitors in 2024.

The commission builds directly on Carlisle's teaching practice at UW, where she trains students in large-scale fabrication through both the sculpture curriculum and Master Craftsman, a paid apprenticeship program she developed to give UW students and graduates hands-on professional experience on real, contracted fabricated projects and commissions.

"Students learn fabrication and professional practice not only through direct instruction, but by watching a working faculty member actively sustain a demanding public commission from contract through installation," Carlisle says.

WyAEA joins everyone across our state in mourning the passing of Ann Simpson and celebrating a remarkable life devoted to the arts, education, and the people of Wyoming.

Ann Simpson believed that every Wyomingite should have access to the arts. Her vision helped make that belief a reality through the University of Wyoming Art Museum's Ann Simpson Artmobile, which has brought original artwork, hands-on learning, and meaningful arts experiences to students and communities across Wyoming for more than three decades. Her unwavering support of artists, educators, and creative opportunities has had a lasting impact on our state.

As art educators, we are deeply grateful for Ann's commitment to ensuring that the arts remain accessible, valued, and celebrated throughout Wyoming. Her legacy lives on in classrooms, museums, and communities, and in the countless students whose lives have been enriched through the power of art.

On behalf of the WyAEA Board and our members across Wyoming, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Ann's family, friends, colleagues, and all who were touched by her generosity, vision, and leadership. Her influence on arts education in Wyoming will be felt for generations to come.
