I’ve got to vent a little about the growing trend I’m seeing in the fi****ms training community. Everyone wants to instruct, but few have the experience or talent to do so. You can be the best shooter in the world, but if you can’t impart the knowledge to your students, you will only frustrate them. Conversely, if you’re a great teacher but a mediocre shooter, you’ll never garner the respect from the people you are instructing. There seems to be a lot of fluff, but no substantial fundamentals. Without the fundamentals, you have no foundation.
The industry seems to be rewarding the “look” rather than the substance. A major fi****ms manufacturer utilizes an exotic looking woman with flowing locks of hair and a bodacious bosom, crammed into a t-shirt fit for a five year old. The shirt flies the brand, she’s in shape, complete with tattoos, but what about the elements of marksmanship?
Pistol manipulation, in-battery/out of battery reloads, stance, positioning of the feet, scanning, follow through, etc..all lacking and not the least bit proper. I would encourage anyone looking for fi****ms training to thoroughly check the credentials of the instructor, and don’t just rely on the fact that they’re sponsored by a fi****ms manufacturer.
If you’re walking away from the class with a participation certificate, but your target still looks like a OO buck pattern from a 12 gauge, then you’re not getting your money’s worth. It’s your hard earned money, just make sure it’s going to the right training program.

I had the pleasure of teaching another range safety and pistol marksmanship class at Casper College. A lot of information packed into two days of classroom, followed by a range day today. We had some new shooters and they did a fantastic job! They paid close attention to the elements and it showed. We had a slight breeze, but beat the rain. This is what it’s all about!

Fun day with these two young men. Their combat accuracy proves that it pays to work on the basics, like the elements of marksmanship, along with some diagnostic trigger drills. The cold and Wyoming wind didn’t slow us down.

It was a pleasure training with these two young men. Going slow, working with the seven elements of marksmanship, along with diagnostic trigger drills, paid off big time. Their combat accuracy was outstanding! Cold, windy day in Wyoming didn’t deter them from getting after it.

Because we can’t be standing on a square range every minute of every day. Life is short, eat the fat and enjoy.
Celebrating 10 years since we climbed the wire and left the communist regime behind. Seemed fitting to pop open a 2014 Clos Du Val and pan sear some ribeyes.
