Imagine a world where common infections can no longer be treated. This could become reality as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites develop resistance to antimicrobial medicines. ๐—”๐—ป๐˜๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ (๐—”๐— ๐—ฅ) makes infections harder to treat, increasing the risk of severe illness, disability, and death.

Symptoms usually begin about 1 week after exposure but can start anywhere from 2 days to more than 2 weeks later. Illness may last from a few days to over a month, and symptoms can improve and then return.

The good news is that Cyclospora is treatable with antibiotics, so if you develop symptoms, contact your healthcare provider.

How to reduce your risk:
Wash your hands before preparing food, eating, or drinking.
Rinse fresh fruits and vegetables before eating. While washing helps remove dirt and debris, cooking is the only way to destroy the parasite.
Foods that have been associated with Cyclospora include raspberries, basil, salad mixes, cilantro, green onions, and snap peas.

If you become sick:
Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
Contact your healthcare provider if symptoms are severe or persistent.
Avoid swimming for at least 2 weeks after diarrhea has completely stopped to help prevent spreading the illness.

Staying informed and practicing good food safety and hand hygiene can help protect you and your family.

A mysterious parasite outbreak is growing across the U.S. โ€” and health officials still don't know what's behind it.

More than 1,000 cases have been reported in Michigan and more than 500 in Ohio as Cyclospora infections continue to climb across dozens of states.

The hallmark symptom is watery, often "explosive" diarrhea that can last for weeks or even months if left untreated, according to the CDC.

Investigators are still working to identify the source of the outbreak. No deaths have been reported.
