A day of remembranceāœŠ

šŸ§” September 30 is a day to remember.

We remember the Native children who were taken from their families and communities and sent to Indian boarding schools.

We remember the children who never came home.

We remember the survivors who carried what happened to them long after they returned home.

We remember the parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, siblings, and communities who waited for children who were taken away.

We remember the languages, ceremonies, names, relationships, and cultural teachings that systems of forced assimilation attempted to sever.

And we remember something else:

They did not erase us.

Our children are still here.

Our languages are being reclaimed.
Our ceremonies continue.
Our families continue.
Our Nations continue.
Our teachings continue.
Our people continue to heal.

September 30 is not only about remembering what was taken.

It is also about honoring what survived.

Today, we remember the children.
We honor the survivors.
We hold the families.
We listen to our Elders.
We protect our children.
We reclaim what was taken.
And we carry our responsibilities forward for the generations yet to come.

šŸ§” We remember. We reclaim. We heal. We carry them forward.
