Calling on Head Start parents and caregivers to make their voice heard!

The federal government has proposed changes to the Head Start Program Performance Standards through a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM). These standards help shape how Head Start programs operate and the services children and families receive.

The proposed changes could affect areas including health and other essential services, staff-to-child ratios, disability supports, eligibility, and opportunities for parents to lead and have a voice in their local programs.

NHSA worked with Head Start parents to develop a national Parent Sign-On Letter responding to these proposed changes. Add your name by September 30, 2026, and help show decision-makers what families want protected.

PROTECT HEAD START!
Scan the QR code or visit the link below to help protect head starts from changes that would reduce quality early learning opportunities, worsen child care ratios, lower standards for Head Start teachers, and hit rural communities especially hard.

10 Simple Ways to Help Your Preschooler Build a Love of Reading
The journey to becoming a reader doesn't begin with sounding out words—it begins with enjoying books!
Here are a few easy ways to nurture early literacy at home:
📖 Read together every day, even if it's only for 10 minutes.
❤️ Let your child see you reading. Children love to imitate the adults they admire.
📚 Give your child choices and let them pick the book.
🎭 Bring stories to life with funny voices, sound effects, and expressions.
❓ Ask questions like, "What do you think will happen next?" or "How do you think that character feels?"
🔁 Read favorite books again and again. Repetition builds confidence and comprehension.
🖍️ Encourage your child to "read" the pictures and tell the story in their own words.
🛑 If your child loses interest, that's okay! Keep reading fun and pressure-free.
🏷️ Point out letters and words you see throughout the day—on signs, cereal boxes, or store labels.
Create a cozy reading corner and keep books within easy reach.
Remember, the goal isn't to rush your child into reading—it's to help them fall in love with books. A child who enjoys reading today is more likely to become a confident reader tomorrow.

Learning is in full gear during our Coolidge Home Visits!
With a little creativity, Mom transformed a simple sheet of paper into a winding road, and together they turned sticker play into a fun learning adventure. As little fingers peeled and placed each sticker along the road, this child was building important fine motor skills, hand strength, and hand-eye coordination—all while having fun!
Activities like these help prepare children for everyday tasks like writing, using scissors, buttoning clothes, and so much more. The best learning experiences don't have to be complicated—they just need a little imagination and time together.

At Head Start, we're proud to partner with families to make learning meaningful, engaging, and right at home.

Sometimes the most powerful moments take less than a minute.
An "I Love You" Ritual is a simple way to build connection, trust, and emotional security with your child. Whether it's a special handshake, a hug, a rhyme, or simply looking into their eyes and saying, "I love you," these predictable moments help children feel safe, seen, and deeply valued.
These small daily rituals can:
✨ Strengthen your bond
✨ Build confidence and emotional security
✨ Support healthy brain development
✨ Create lasting memories your child will carry for years to come
The best part? It doesn't have to be complicated. Just a few intentional moments each day can make a lifetime of difference. ❤️
Watch this short video for a simple example and consider creating an "I Love You" ritual that's unique to your family!
