10 Simple Ways to Help Your Preschooler Build a Love of Reading
The journey to becoming a reader doesn't begin with sounding out words—it begins with enjoying books!
Here are a few easy ways to nurture early literacy at home:
📖 Read together every day, even if it's only for 10 minutes.
❤️ Let your child see you reading. Children love to imitate the adults they admire.
📚 Give your child choices and let them pick the book.
🎭 Bring stories to life with funny voices, sound effects, and expressions.
❓ Ask questions like, "What do you think will happen next?" or "How do you think that character feels?"
🔁 Read favorite books again and again. Repetition builds confidence and comprehension.
🖍️ Encourage your child to "read" the pictures and tell the story in their own words.
🛑 If your child loses interest, that's okay! Keep reading fun and pressure-free.
🏷️ Point out letters and words you see throughout the day—on signs, cereal boxes, or store labels.
Create a cozy reading corner and keep books within easy reach.
Remember, the goal isn't to rush your child into reading—it's to help them fall in love with books. A child who enjoys reading today is more likely to become a confident reader tomorrow.

Learning is in full gear during our Coolidge Home Visits!
With a little creativity, Mom transformed a simple sheet of paper into a winding road, and together they turned sticker play into a fun learning adventure. As little fingers peeled and placed each sticker along the road, this child was building important fine motor skills, hand strength, and hand-eye coordination—all while having fun!
Activities like these help prepare children for everyday tasks like writing, using scissors, buttoning clothes, and so much more. The best learning experiences don't have to be complicated—they just need a little imagination and time together.

At Head Start, we're proud to partner with families to make learning meaningful, engaging, and right at home.

Little hands are doing big things!
During a recent home visit in Maricopa, we spent time building fine motor skills through coloring and drawing—activities that help strengthen the small muscles in children's hands and fingers. These everyday moments are laying the foundation for future skills like writing, cutting with scissors, buttoning clothes, and so much more.
Learning doesn't always happen at a desk. Sometimes it's as simple as sitting together, sharing a smile, and creating with crayons. Every scribble is a step toward growth!

Strong routines help kids thrive!
Did you know that one of the best ways to support your child's success at Head Start is by building consistent daily routines?
A predictable routine helps children feel safe, confident, and ready to learn each day. Here are a few simple ways to set your child up for success:
🌙 Keep a consistent bedtime and morning routine.
📱 Turn off TVs, tablets, and phones before bedtime to help everyone get a better night's sleep.
👕 Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before to make mornings less stressful.
🤒 Not sure if your child should stay home because they're sick or have been exposed to COVID-19? Reach out to your Family/Center Advocate (FCA) or your child's teacher—we're here to help.
🏡 If your child does need to stay home, ask your teacher for activities and learning materials so they can continue learning at home.
📅 Whenever possible, schedule appointments and vacations outside of school hours.
💙 If your child is feeling nervous about coming to school, talk with your teacher or FCA. We want to partner with you to help your child feel happy, safe, and confident.
🚗 Have a backup transportation plan with a trusted family member, neighbor, or friend in case your usual plans change.
Together, we can help every child build healthy habits, strong attendance, and a lifelong love of learning!

Big learning happens during little moments.
During a recent home visit in Eloy, this young learner explored the world through imaginative play and sensory experiences. From pretending to cook with real kitchen tools to discovering how scarves move through the air, every activity encouraged curiosity, creativity, language development, and problem-solving.
At Head Start, we know children learn best through play. Our home visitors partner with families to bring engaging, developmentally appropriate activities into the home—helping parents become their child's first and most important teacher.
Every laugh, every discovery, and every shared moment helps build confidence and prepares children for future success.
Together, we're building strong foundations—one home visit at a time.

Curiosity is the Beginning of Learning
Did you know that children are born naturally curious? Every "Why?" and "How?" is their way of discovering how the world works.
As parents and caregivers, we don't have to create curiosity—we simply need to nurture it. When we slow down, explore alongside our children, and encourage their questions, we're helping build confidence, creativity, problem-solving skills, and a lifelong love of learning.
Here are a few simple ways to encourage curiosity every day:
🔍 Follow your child's interests—even if it's bugs, trucks, or puddles!
📚 Read together and let them choose books that excite them.
❓ Ask open-ended questions like, "What do you think will happen?" or "Why do you think that works?"
🌳 Get outside and wonder together about the world around you.
💛 Remember—it's okay if you don't know the answer. Looking for it together teaches children that learning never stops.
Small moments of exploration today can inspire a lifetime of discovery tomorrow.
