Young Writers’ Institute is a community of budding authors who come together to learn, share, and grow together through the written word. Through skill-specific and genre-focused classes, students are able to choose a course of study that interests them and helps them develop in the areas that are important to them. Students work in small groups to practice their writing, which is beneficial to the writing process in many ways: students can create new ideas together, nurture and guide each other, and celebrate their accomplishments as a team.YWI was founded in 2013 by Casey Midkiff, an experienced teacher and lifelong writer, after many years of private and small-group tutoring at her kitchen table. Full-day camp on Monday! Only two spots left.

This is a super fun genre in which readers choose their own paths through the stories. Parents probably remember popular choose-a-path series from the 80's and 90's, but did you know that they are making a comeback? Structure is the focus of this camp, as gamebooks require a ton of planning and organization. Students will carefully map their multi-path stories and learn how to entice their readers with interesting premises, compelling characters, and high-stakes, choice-based plot twists. They then draft their stories and play-test their classmates' stories!

New class beginning tonight!

Using our imagination, we can travel anywhere and anyWHEN we want! This year, we begin our journey through time with Prehistoric Earth, our fun and creative writing class for students in grades 3-4.

Steaming jungles, angry oceans, and ferocious beasts...Earth long ago was an amazing but deadly place! Join us on a journey to the beginning of Earth's history and imagine an adventure in this unforgiving landscape. What would it be like to survive in a world filled with towering creatures and wild, untamed nature? In this class, students will use their imaginations to write thrilling stories set in the prehistoric past.

This workshop is six 90-minute weekly classes.

Last chance to register for this year-long program - classes begin next week! Homeschool and after-school timings available.

The IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing) curriculum is for students who are new to formal writing or would benefit from very structured writing instruction and practice in essays, summaries, and other expository forms.

We are running out of space! Here are the openings we currently have available:

Level A1 for grades 5-6
Mondays 6:45-8:00 (full)
Tuesdays 5:30-6:45 (full)
Wednesdays 12:30-1:45 (4 spots available)

Level A2 for grades 6-7
Tuesdays 4:15-5:30 (3 spots available)
Tuesdays 6:45-8:00 (2 spots available)
Thursdays 11:00-12:15 (6 spots available)

Level B1 for grades 7-8
Mondays 6:45-8:00 (new class, 6 spots available)
Tuesdays 5:30-6:45 (full)

Writing is a practice that can connect us to ourselves, to one another, and to the Earth itself. Let's take our writing outside to capture the wonder of nature with our words! Wild Writers is a workshop that meets at local parks where we will venture into natural spaces to watch, listen, discuss, read, learn, play, share, and - most importantly - WRITE!

To accommodate demand, we have added a new IEW Level B1 class on Mondays 6:45-8:00. This class is perfect for students in grades 7-8 who want to practice and master important academic writing skills! This class is also an excellent entry point for middle schoolers into a program that they can grow with - through high school and with college in mind.

Classes begin September 14!
