We test for proficiency, not participation.
A lot of schools test everyone at the same time, every two months, all the way to black belt. The calendar says it's testing day, so everyone lines up and everyone advances. It keeps things simple. It keeps the schedule moving.
We do things differently.
1. The timeline stretches as students advance
Early ranks test more frequently. But as students progress, we space testing out more because higher ranks require deeper skill development. A green belt needs more time than a yellow belt. That's not a delay. That's respect for what the rank actually means.
2. Stripes are earned, not given
Between tests, students earn stripes on their belt by demonstrating specific skills. No stripes, no test. If a student is close but not quite ready, we schedule individual practice sessions to help them get there. We want every student to succeed, and will never set them up for failure. We'll put in the extra work to make that happen.
3. Ready means ready
If a student isn't ready, they don't test. We don't force it. We don't just pass them through. Because when they do test, we want them to know they earned it.
4. How we can help
We think about pacing. We want students testing regularly because momentum matters. But we won't sacrifice readiness for the schedule. That's the difference between proficiency-based testing and calendar-based promotions.

Standards aren't about being strict. They're about refusing to waste potential.
A lot of schools make things easier so students feel good in the moment. Pass them
before they're ready. Keep everyone moving together.
But here's what that actually does. It robs your child of the confidence that comes from earning something real.
When a student knows they got their belt because the calendar said it was time, not because they mastered the material, that doubt stays with them. They might not say it out loud, but they feel it.
We hold the standard and help students reach it. That's the difference.
Real achievement builds real confidence. The kind that doesn't collapse under pressure.
