Have you ever handed back a test and heard a disappointed student say, “But I studied”?

In my latest post, I share a 45-minute retrieval roundup that helps students identify what they truly know—and what they still need to practice—before an assessment. I’ve also included the complete lesson plan and student materials so you can adapt it for your classroom.

I’d love to hear how you help students learn what effective studying actually looks like!

Be well,
Cori

You hand back a test. A student looks at the grade, and their eyes start to well up with tears. They wait until the end of class to approach you. Disappointment etched on their face, they say, & #82…

116. Making Statistics Stick: What 756 Skittles Can Teach Us About Data

We all have our strengths—and our areas for growth. When I first started teaching psychology, statistics was definitely an area I needed to grow in. Mean, median, and mode? I could handle those. But some of the more complex statistical concepts? Those took a little more work. And I knew I wasn’t alone. Many of my students approached statistics with the same hesitation....

115: Nature vs. Nurture (Spoiler: It’s Complicated)

Nature vs. nurture is one of those psychology topics students think they already understand—until you ask them to actually apply it. Most students walk into class with their minds made up about which matters more: biology or the environment. What I noticed, though, was that while my students were quick to pick a side, they were much slower to consider how the two interacted....

This series has aimed to explore how hope, optimism, and the stories we tell ourselves shape how we live, learn, and persevere through adversity. In the first post, we saw how learned helplessness can develop and transform into pessimism. In the second post, we explored optimism, including what it is, why it matters, and how it can be cultivated as both a mindset and a skill....

What's one sure way to know if you're an optimist? You set the alarm at night and trust you will get up when it goes off. That simple act, trusting that tomorrow will come and you'll rise to meet it, captures the essence of optimism. It's more than wishful thinking. It's an orientation toward the future, a belief that effort will matter and that the day ahead is worth stepping into....

Balancing AI and human ingenuity in education This is the 3rd part of a series about the use and impact of AI in the classroom. As promised, in this installment we will explore ways to purposefully integrate technology so that it serves as an aid, rather than a replacement for human creativity and understanding. Here’s what I have learned about designing lessons that both leverage the power of AI AND the power of human thinking....

This post might ruffle some feathers. Grading is an intensely personal topic for many teachers. Each teacher has their own unique, intensely personal web of belief guiding their decisions and policies. This can make having conversations about grading extremely difficult. However, they are necessary to ensure that our students are being assessed fairly.

In this post, I share what I have learned about how we can change our grading practices to make them more accurate, more meaningful, and more equitable.
