Happy Terns & Tips Tuesday!
This week’s term is RUNNING ECONOMY!
Running Economy is a complex, multifactorial concept that represents the sum of metabolic, cardiorespiratory, biomechanical and neuromuscular efficiency during running.
Simply put, it means the amount of oxygen your body needs to run at a certain pace.
It’s measured in the volume of oxygen (VO2) consumed per kilogram of body weight per kilometer. This is usually measure in a lab-based test.
The less oxygen you consume per distance, the better your Running Economy.
A range of factors influence running economy including technique, strength, stride length, cadence, leg swing, ground contact time and more.
Everyone has different levels of measured VO2. If one’s body can become more economical with it, ( do more while using less oxygen), then the reward is enhanced capacity for anything that requires physical stamina.
Tips to improve Running Economy:
- train consistently… ie. practice running
- incorporate hill running
- strength training to improve neuromuscular efficiency
- cadence work
- aerobic base building
How economical and efficient is YOUR running?

1 day away from Fall half and full marathon training and reason #4 why you should join us!
4. It’s OK to do something for yourself!
It’s OK to be a little selfish and do things for yourself…doing so prevents burnout, recharges your mental energy, and allows you to care for others more effectively. Healthy self-prioritization is a vital tool for personal well-being.
The empty cup rule: You cannot give your best energy, love, or support to anyone else when your own physical and emotional reserves are completely empty.
