“I just didn’t really think school was for me.” 💙

For Evan Giles of Du Quoin, it started with an interest in videos about cars. With help from a high school counselor, that interest led him to John A. Logan College, where he found a learning environment that finally clicked.

Now, he’s gaining real-world experience, building confidence, and moving toward a future in the automotive field.

This Community College Month, we’re sharing stories of students who chose JALC and what they’ve gained along the way.

THE JESSI COMBS FOUNDATION 2024 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM IS NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS!

KEY DATES:
APRIL 30, 2024 – Application window opens for submissions
JUNE 30, 2024 – Application window for submissions closes
AUGUST 27, 2024 – Scholarship recipients announced

The program issues scholarships to women pursuing a career in the skilled trades. Now entering our FIFTH year, the program has already issued over $180,000 in scholarships to 35 deserving women over the past four years.

The Jessi Combs Foundation, a recognized 501(c)3, was founded in 2019. The mission of The Foundation is to EDUCATE, INSPIRE and EMPOWER the next generation of trailblazing and stereotype-breaking women. Good big changes are coming.

To start, this year the automotive program will start offering new curriculum. A student can chose between a one year basic automotive certificate, two year master certificate, or a two year associate degree. There will be some new classes added, and modified older classes. The lecture/lab classes are 2 days a week, and there will be 3 different all day service labs throughout the year. There are two new online only classes: 1st is an Automotive Orientation and Safety class and the 2nd is Hybrid/Electric Vehicle History and Safety.

Then as the article says, a major facelift with upgrades are coming. Stay tuned for more information to come.

John A Logan College is on the receiving end of a massive federal grant. More than 4 million dollars will go toward upgrades on campus.

JALC Student Trustee Jeremiah Brown shares a laugh with Trustee Dr. Glenn Poshard at the June meeting of the JALC Board of Trustees

Brown changed his life and now wants to help others do the same.

In addition to classes and his involvement on campus, Brown took advantage of the College’s apprenticeship program.

John A. Logan College offers 12 such program majors, one of which is Automotive Repair, Brown’s program of choice.

In the apprenticeship program, a local employer provides formal on-the-job training in the form of a paid position while the student is in school.

According to the College’s Associate Director of Grants and Program Initiatives, Dr. Tammy Gwaltney, “The apprenticeship is a win-win for everyone, especially a student as driven as Jeremiah Brown”.

Despite balancing work, school, and family, Jeremiah is coveting his opportunity to build a better life, and he has advice for others on the same path he was going down.

“You need to try to do something better in your life, never give up, and never get comfortable and keep striving for greatness”, said Brown.
