In the College of Education (COE) at California State University, Dominguez Hills, we prepare teachers, counselors, and school leaders who are committed to equity and racial justice. We believe that educators, in all roles, have the ability to improve the lives of children through greater access to educational opportunities. We are committed to preparing our students to become effective, impassion

ed collaborators in ensuring that every child has every opportunity to learn, to grow and to thrive. Through a wide range of degree and credential programs led by dedicated and experienced faculty mentors, we are preparing the next generation of qualified, exceptionally prepared, inspired and committed educators that our communities and children deserve. Our commitment to diversity is reflected in the fact that our full-time faculty is majority-minority, and more than 70 percent of our graduate students are people of color who reflect the diversity of Los Angeles. The COE offers a wide selection of programs, enrolling approximately 600 undergraduate and 500 post baccalaureate and graduate students. In each of these programs, students will encounter individualized academic advising and step-by-step guidance to program completion or degree, low faculty-to-student ratios, and dedicated, mentoring faculty with real-world experiences. Congratulations to Ms. Latrese Martinez, alumna of our College of Education and California State University, Dominguez Hills, who earned the MA in Education: Multicultural Option master's degree in 1998.

Ms. Martinez received the Los Angeles Unified School District's 2026 Teacher of the Year award for demonstrating a strong commitment to her students, school and community as a 5th grade teacher at Wilmington Park Elementary, a school that serves a diverse urban student population in the City of Wilmington, located in LAUSD's Region South (LAschoolsSouth). She also advanced as a candidate for the LA County Teacher of the Year!

"Earning my master’s degree was transformative for my teaching practice and my understanding of education as a vehicle for equity. Through this program I confronted my own biases, learned the history and cultural assets of the communities of the children I teach, and to understand how systemic inequities shaped the classroom dynamic I was witnessing everyday. The multicultural focus gave me language and frameworks I still use today. It has helped me mentor new teachers on culturally responsive practices, advocate for the communities I serve and helped me remain committed to under-resourced schools."

Congratulations to Ms. Melissa Zuno, alumna of our College of Education and California State University, Dominguez Hills, who earned the B.A. in Liberal Studies in spring 2025 and is also currently finishing her last semester of our Special Education Mild/Moderate Support Needs teaching credential.

Ms. Zuno received Los Angeles Unified School District's 2026 Rookie of the Year award for engaging & supporting all students, and creating & maintaining an effective classroom learning environment during her first year as a TK-1st grade Special Day Class (Autism Core) teacher at Ascot Avenue Elementary School in Los Angeles, part of LAUSD Region East.

"The Liberal Studies major and the Special Education teaching credential program have prepared me well by supporting me throughout my educational journey and providing a well-rounded education. My professors have taught me not only through coursework, but also by sharing their personal experiences and the realities of teaching, which has given me valuable insight into the profession. The Special Education credential program at CSUDH has also helped shape me into an honest, reflective educator who values inclusion, diversity, and creating a supportive learning environment for all students."

Congratulations to Mr. Jesus Ramirez, alumnus of our College of Education and California State University, Dominguez Hills, who earned the single-subject teaching credential in Mathematics in spring 2026.

Mr. Ramirez received the Los Angeles Unified School District's 2026 Rookie of the Year award for his exemplary work during his first year as a high school Algebra 1 teacher at the Humanities & Arts (HArts) Academy of Los Angeles in Harbor City, part of LAschoolsSouth.

"The [teaching credential] program at CSUDH has prepared me in the best way possible. Phase 1 gave me a clear understanding of what to expect in the classroom, while Phase 2 opened my eyes to the strategies we use to promote student engagement, opportunity, and success. All of these experiences have contributed to my growth and confidence in the classroom. In addition, the professors are incredibly supportive, and being surrounded by future educators who share the same passion to succeed and make a difference has been truly inspiring."

Congratulations to Ms. Anna Soffer, alumna of our College of Education and California State University, Dominguez Hills, who earned the Preliminary Administrative Services Credential and the M.A. in School Leadership in 2022.

Ms. Soffer received the Los Angeles Unified School District's 2026 Teacher of the Year award for demonstrating a strong commitment to her students, school and community as a 6th grade teacher at Thomas Starr King Middle School ESTEAM Magnet, a school that serves the communities of Franklin Hills, Los Feliz, Silverlake, Echo Park, and Hollywood in LAUSD Region West.

"I'm using the skills I learned during the [School Leadership] program to help shape my school's Positive Behavior Intervention Support and discipline policies...Dr. Karuza and Dr. Fortner shaped who I am as a teacher-leader."

We, the Snap Inc. Institute for Technology & Education and the College of Education at California State University, Dominguez Hills, are excited to welcome 25 local girls, ages 8–16, to campus for this year's STEM From Dance summer camp! The camp kicked off this week on Monday, July 13th and runs through July 31st, giving campers the opportunity to explore the intersection of STEM and dance.

This year, participants are creating digital backgrounds that will be projected during the original dances they choreograph throughout the program. We can't wait to celebrate their creativity and all they've accomplished at the final performance on July 31!

The impact of our academic programs is felt not only in the South Bay and surrounding counties and school districts. It is felt up and down the State of California, such as San Diego.

Congratulations to Mr. Wade Paul Morgan, alumnus of our College of Education and California State University, Dominguez Hills, who earned the single-subject teaching credential in math and the M.A. in Education: Curriculum & Instruction option in spring 2021.

Mr. Morgan received San Diego Unified School District's 2026 Site Teacher of the Year award for his valuable contributions to the staff and students of the district and his wonderful work as a 5th grade math teacher at Hamilton Elementary in City Heights, an urban community in central San Diego.

"The teacher educator preparation and master’s programs at CSUDH’s College of Education helped shape me into the educator I am today. The professors’ passion for teaching and commitment to their students inspired me and reaffirmed that I was pursuing my true purpose in life."

Our TEACH UP certificate program officially launched its inaugural cohort, preparing educators to lead with compassion, cultural understanding, and a commitment to serving students of color and historically underserved communities.

From inspiring words by TEACH UP founders Drs. Peter Watts and Didi Watts to a powerful keynote from educator and advocate Tunji Adebayo, attendees were reminded that teaching is more than a profession—it is a commitment to creating classrooms where every student feels seen, valued, and supported.

Congratulations to cohort 1 and to the faculty, staff, and supporters who helped make this milestone possible! 💙💛
