PRAXIS is excited to welcome artists Yoshie Sakai and Alan Nakagawa as the 2018-2019 PRAXIS Artists-In-Residence!!!
Yoshie Sakai cleverly uses tropes from East-Asian soap operas to expose the complex myths of the “model minority” through the lens of the longstanding, yet under-represented Japanese American community in South Los Angeles. Yoshie is working closely with CSUDH students to create a solo exhibition titled "KOKO's Neighborhood" that will include video and audio of stories told by CSUDH students. This project is supported in partnership with the Pasadena Art Alliance. (Exhibition: January - March 2019)
Alan Nakagawa is collaborating with local South LA youth, CSUDH students and the CSUDH Donald R. & Beverly J. Gerth Archives and Special Collections. He is working with the newly rediscovered Ninomiya Photo Studio Archive, to create new work for the solo exhibition titled "Unfinished Proof Ninomiya / Alan Nakagawa" a project about the Los Angeles history of Japanese American families. This project is supported by the NHPRC (Exhibition: May - September 2019)
