Ronald Alvin Stewart, PhD
​​​Carrollton High School Class of 1983

Dr. Ronald Alvin Stewart was born and raised in Perry Township. He attended Carrollton Schools from 1971-1983. After high school graduation, Ron attended Kent State University, receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in 1987. He attended Case Western Reserve University where he received his Master’s in 1996. Dr. Stewart holds a Doctorate in Philosophy from Union Institute & University.
Dr. Ron became an educator, consultant, and advocate for health, aging, and inclusion engaged in service to the nonprofit and public sectors. He was the owner and founder of Tailored Solutions Consultancy from 1993-2025. His services included working with organizations, staff, and volunteers through training, board development, planning, evaluation and fundraising to name a few ways. Ron is an experienced grant writer. Through his work and service on numerous nonprofit boards and foundations across the United States and Mexico, Dr. Stewart has advanced programs improving health care access, supporting children with disabilities, and strengthening nonprofit leadership.
Honors bestowed upon Dr. Stewart are Ronald A. Stewart Day by the City of Cleveland and the Most Influential Person from Pasadena, California. Three awards have been bestowed upon Ron and they are: Extra Mile Award from the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority, Young Alumni Achievement Award from Kent State University and the Favorite Employer Award from Pacific Clinics. Dr. Stewart has sat as a board member, of numerous associations in Ohio, California and Mexico from 1988 through 2024, the last one being the California Disabilities Services Association from 2021 - 2024. In 2015, he was a Guest Lecturer for CWRU’s Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences. From 2006-2008, Ron was the Planning Commissioner for the City of Desert Hot Springs Planning Commission, and from 2004-2006 he was an Adjunct Professor for the University of La Verne.
Dr. Stewart has been a huge part of the communities he has touched. Ron is the founder and donor to the Ronald A. Stewart Scholarship Fund for International Study & Service at Case Western Reserve University from 2010-present. In founding this scholarship, Ron wanted to help young people (many from modest backgrounds) pursue service and learning around the world. In doing so he sponsored a prize competition among Carrollton High School’s art class to create the initial logo for this Fund. He is presently on seven different boards, 2 of which are in Ohio, the Ohio History Connection as a member and the Carroll County Historical Society as a member. He currently is a life member in our very own Carrollton Schools Alumni Foundation. He was a member at Perrysville UMC from 1978-1997. Ron has been a part of other associations, foundations and programs throughout the years.
Ron Is married to Carlos Sosa Ruiz and lives in Mexico. Today he is semi-retired, and continues to volunteer with organizations in California and Ohio to strengthen communities and improve lives. Dr. Stewart was nominated by Tamara Henry-Bryan who felt his distinguished career, lifelong service and steadfast reflection of the values that shaped him made him a worthy candidate for our CSAF Hall of Fame award.

Fred H. Barnett, Jr. - Carrollton High School Class of 1969

Fred H. Barnett, Jr. graduated from CHS in 1969. Before graduation, Fred began to serve his community of Mechanicstown, Fox Township, and Carroll County, as a volunteer firefighter with the Fox Township Volunteer Fire Department. Fred was drafted into the US Army almost two years after high school and served from 1971-1973 earning the rank of Specialist 4 in the Military Police. Fred was awarded the Soldier’s Medal of Heroism for saving a 10-year-old boy from drowning at Fort Monroe, Virginia. The Soldier’s Medal of Heroism is the highest personal decoration of heroism outside of combat.
At the time Fred was drafted, he had just started working as a railroad tower block operator. On returning to civilian life Fred picked back up his job at the railroad and worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad/CONRAIL Corp from 1969-1983 until his job was automated by computers.
Thereafter, Fred embarked on a career with the Ohio Department of Transportation as a highway maintenance worker from 1983-2012. He was awarded the ODOT Director’s Award for Community Service. His nominator stated that very seldom in 30 years of service did Fred miss a snow call out or other call out to maintain the roads!
Before and after his military service, Fred served as a volunteer firefighter with the Fox Township Fire Department for over 50+ years. As a firefighter, assistant fire chief and fire chief (from 2009-2025) Fred has helped his community and department in numerous ways. Other examples of this are answering calls for service for fires, vehicle crashes, flooded basements, severe weather, medical emergencies, washing and waxing fire engines, checking equipment and even mowing grass. He rarely missed a fire call, saying that there was no better service than those who dropped everything to help their neighbor, “Christianity in action”. Fred was responsible for obtaining many grants that updated their equipment. He, also, worked at various fundraisers and helped Fox Township build a new fire station. Fred was Carroll County’s Firefighter of the Year in 2008.
Fred has been an active member of the American Legion as the past commander and a current officer. For the last 15+ years, he has organized, chaired, raised funds, and interviewed candidates from CHS to attend Buckeye Boys and Girls State programs. He is a charter member of the Great Divide Ruritan Club and a member of the Corinth Presbyterian Church.
Since retiring from ODOT, Fred has also worked as a janitor in the Carrollton Schools, but still responds to fire calls and stays very active in the American Legion and Ruritan Club.
Fred Barnett is married to Dena Barnett and has a son, Atty Steven D. Barnett and stepdaughter, Denae L. Batty along with multiple grandchildren. Fred was nominated by his son, Steven Barnett, who feels his Dad embodies the best of Carrollton High School in his service to this community and in helping others without reservation.

2026 CHS HOF INDUCTEE

Craig L. Winters – Carrollton High School Class of 1965

Mr. Craig L. Winters attended Carrollton School District for 13 years (k-12). As a teenager, he was honored with an Eagle Scout award. After his graduation in 1965 and while earning his Bachelor of Science in Education from Kent State University, he was hired as a Special Education Teacher with a temporary certificate in the fall of 1968. The following year he was elevated to the position of Elementary Assistant Principal while still working on his degree. Craig graduated from Kent State in 1970.

In 1977, he became Principal of the Carrollton Elementary Building and then received his Master of Science in Education from Dayton University in 1978. By 1980 Mr. Winters not only received his Local Superintendent and Elementary Supervisor degrees from Dayton University, but was honored as Outstanding Principal by the TusCaHo Council of Exceptional Children. During his career as Principal, Mr. Winters was a vital part of Carrollton Schools’ involvement in the State of Ohio’s Classroom of the Future Program which was initiated in the 1990’s. He served as an administrator for over 24 years until health issues caused him to step back from this role. With his passion for children, Mr. Winters finished up as a 6th grade teacher at Dellroy Elementary until his retirement in 1998. Craig was an educator and is a man that always wanted to be a positive influence on the lives of his students.

During his career, Mr. Winters always supported and coached several teams with the Carrollton Track Program along with the Little Warriors Basketball Program. In the fall of 1969, he started the Carrollton Cross Country Program. In his tenure as Cross-Country Coach, Mr. Winters coached State and Regional qualifiers. He also took the 1975 and 1976 CC teams to the State Meet. These State qualifiers were the first Carrollton teams to go to State since 1942. In 2009 Craig was honored for his contributions to Carrollton Sports by being inducted into the Carrollton Athletic Hall of Fame.

After retiring, Mr. Winters obtained his insurance license and worked for the local Allstate office of Tom White and the late Tom Turnipseed. He is a lifetime member of the Ohio Education Association and a member of the Carroll County Retired Teachers. Craig is a Christian and has been a lifelong Methodist serving on various committees and boards. He is currently a member of Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church.

Craig and his wife Kaye, also an educator, are the parents of two daughters, Mandy Myers and Megan C***s and a son, Christian, who passed away in 1975. He is enjoying these retirement years following around his 11 grandchildren with their activities plus his 2 great grandchildren.

Mr. Winters was nominated by Jackie DeWitt who felt privileged to be one of his students in the early 1970’s. Knowing him as a principal and coach, she was thrilled to know her own children would be under his leadership in their early elementary years. One thing that always stood out to Jackie was seeing this Principal greet each and every student as they got off the bus in the mornings with a “good morning” and “nice to see you today” to a “good-bye” as they left the school with a handshake, high five or even a hug. This is just proof that being kind costs nothing, and you never know who’s watching!

Carrollton High School class of 2026 HOF inductee

Mrs. Amy Curry Sturm - Carrollton High School Class of 1994

Mrs. Amy Curry Sturm graduated from CHS in 1994, and has distinguished herself in the areas of health, science, medicinal education, and research by becoming a Genetic Counselor. She is a member of the National Society for Genetic Counselors who are the driving force towards universal, innovative, and equitable genomic healthcare which leads to better health outcomes for all.

After graduating from Baldwin-Wallace College in 1998, Mrs. Sturm earned her first MS from The Ohio State University in 2000, and her second Master’s Degree from the University of Michigan in 2001. Amy began her career at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus as a Genetic Counselor. From 2005 - Present, she has been the Executive Director of Ohio State Genomic Health at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus.

Amy has received many awards - one being the Columbus Business First Forty Under 40 Award in 2016, which recognizes young “movers and shakers” in the community. The longest-running awards program at Columbus Business First is in its 24th year. This is a two-pronged award. She had to show achievement at work and with volunteering her time. Mrs. Sturm was selected as one of forty honorees out of over 240 applicants.

National and International Presentations have also been a part of Amy’s career with at least 54 presentations listed on her application. She has also been on ten National Advisory Boards including the University of Pennsylvania’s Genetic Counseling Graduate Program Advisory Board.
There are numerous Professional Activities in which Mrs. Sturm has been or is involved. She has held various positions and appointments in the National Society of Genetic Counselors. Other Professional Activities in which Amy is involved include the American Heart Association, National Lipid Association, American Society of Human Genetics, Society for Behavioral Medicine, and Training Program Committees.

Course and Curriculum Development were also an important part of Mrs. Sturm’s career between 2008-2022 such as the American College of Cardiology, and the Connor Sent Memorial Symposium on Sudden Cardiac Death in Athletes hosted by The Ohio State University, to name a couple. She has been a consultant for many organizations such as Nest Genomics; 23andMe, Population Health Genomics; and Invitae, Gia Cardiovascular Genetics Chatbot.

Currently, Mrs. Sturm is a consultant on the Identification Methods, Patient Activation, and Cascade Testing for IMPACT-FH (Familial Hypercholesterolemia) which is the most common cardiovascular genetic disorder, leading to premature cardiac disease and death. She has published 124 total scientific publications, 2 editorials, 3 book chapters and has a GoogleScholar link.

Amy is married to Jeffrey Sturm and has 2 children, Jackson (17) and Stella (14). Community service has also been a big part of Amy’s life both for her children’s schools and her community where she lives in Lewis Center, Ohio. Some examples of her volunteer service include being a genetic counselor at Olentangy Orange Middle School in Lewis Center for over 20 years, Field Day Volunteer and Co-Chair, Stagecoach Theatre Parent Group Volunteer, and Choir Parent Group Volunteer.

Mrs. Sturm’s nominator, Ellyn Dunlap, noted that Amy has many other accomplishments in genomic health that she did not have room to mention.

Know any deserving CHS Alumni???

Hall of Fame nominations sought; deadline Nov. 30
The Carrollton School Alumni Foundation is now taking nominations for the 2026 Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame.
Nominations are due by Nov. 30, 2025, and must be mailed to the Carrollton Schools Alumni Foundation at PO Box 616, Carrollton, Ohio 44615 and must be postmarked no later than Nov. 30 to be considered.
Each year the Foundation looks to recognize up to four CHS alumni who have distinguished themselves in various fields including, in the arts, business, community service, education, entertainment, health, industry, law, medicine, military, music, philanthropy, politics, public service, religion, scholarship and science.

The foundation also encourages any sustaining members who have not paid their dues yet for 2025 to do so.
