Yo, Fire Service!

Not everyone is meant to do this job; it's ok to tell someone firefighting is not for them. It's called a "probationary period" for a reason, use it! "But they are a good employee"; there is a major difference between being a good employee and being a good firefighter. We are putting the people we serve and other firefighters in danger because we make everyone think they can be a "firefighter". This isn't, Make a Wish!

My opinion has not changed since this was posted last year. If anything it has only strengthened.

It is an unfortunate side effect of a changing society that folks think anybody can do anything. I was a lineman when I played football. I was never going to be a cornerback. But these days men can have babies and just anybody can be a fireman. It just simply doesn’t work that way. Guard the gates to your organization with the same vigor and passion that you guard your ISO rating. I can promise you the caliber of person you hire means far more than what some insurance adjuster tells you that your department is capable of!!!
