Welcome Mrs. Alisha Kim to the New Heights Learning Center team!

Many of you already know Mrs. Alisha — she has spent 16 years teaching elementary students at a private Montessori school and currently serves as Lower Elementary Director at New Song Summer School.

Her Orton-Gillingham trained approach gives learners the structured foundation they need to become confident, capable readers. Because strong reading skills are the foundation for all future subjects in middle school, high school, and beyond.

She runs 10 book clubs that are completely full — and we are so grateful she is opening 3 Friday morning groups exclusively at New Heights.

She is exactly who you want teaching your child to read!

Day 4 — our final day of summer camp!

Our theme of the day: Be Brave — Try New Things!

Humphrey the Hamster visited our classroom and taught us about being brave when we try new things — new sports, chess, or learning anything for the first time. He even introduced us to the almond-shaped amygdala, the part of the brain that sounds the alarm when something feels new.

Over four full days, our campers practiced reminding themselves that we can do hard things! They’re ready to face the new year — and we are incredibly grateful for the families and support systems walking alongside us as we learn every day.

Day 3 of Summer Camp!

The phrase of the day: plant good thoughts!

We learned how healthy plants need good soil to grow — then applied the very same idea to our brains.

Learners practiced identifying good thoughts, because when our neurons fire together, they wire together. The more we practice a good thought, the stronger it grows — just like a plant with rich soil. A little brain-gardening to get us ready for the upcoming school year!

Here’s something worth knowing before you dismiss music as “just an elective.”

MUSIC activates all four lobes of your child’s brain at once  — not just the creative side. Rhythm, memory, focus, emotional regulation, and coordination are all engaged simultaneously.

In The Whole-Brain Child, Dr. Dan Siegel argues that an integrated brain — where different parts work together in a coordinated and balanced way — creates stronger self-understanding, better relationships, and greater success in learning.  Few activities demand that kind of integration more naturally than making music.

And in Most Likely to Succeed, Tony Wagner and Ted Dintersmith make the case that wonder, creativity, and initiative need to be at the heart of learning  — not test prep. Music isn’t extra. It’s the thing.

What if art class was actually preparing your child for the future?

Tony Wagner found that the world’s most innovative people shared one thing in common — as children, they were given space to play, to create, and to follow what genuinely interested them.
Art does that.

When a child sits with a blank canvas, they’re learning to make decisions without a right answer. They’re building tolerance for the messy middle. They’re discovering what it feels like to have a vision and chase it.

And when that work gets displayed for an audience? A real audience creates real stakes. And real stakes are where real skills are built.

At New Heights, art isn’t a break from learning. It’s where some of the deepest learning happens — building toward the New Heights Showcase, May 7, 2027.

Incredible year

Wow — we are just taking it all in.

Reflecting on this amazing year we had together, learning together, growing together. Every single day in this space reminded us why we do what we do.

Thank you to our families for supporting your learners by showing up, staying in tune with their needs, and trusting us with the most important people in your lives. None of this happens without you.

And a very special thank you to our teacher, Ms. Makenzie — for teaching our learners with passion, patience, and perseverance every single day. You show up for these kids in the most beautiful way and it does not go unnoticed. We are so grateful for you.
