Chapter 1 – Benefits of Rainwater Harvesting - Alabama Cooperative Extension System 10/08/2021

Chapter 1 – Benefits of Rainwater Harvesting - Alabama Cooperative Extension System

Worldwide water consumption is rising at double the rate of the population; however, the amount of fresh water remains at only 2.5 percent of the world’s water resources. Thus, harvesting rainwater on-site has many benefits:

~Reduces storm water runoff and associated negative impacts of flooding on downstream water quality in highly urbanized areas

~Helps with water conservation and reduces demand on public water supply

~Prepares for times of drought

~Assists with water management in flood- and erosion-prone areas in the home landscape

~Saves money on utility bills for irrigation

~Is better for plants that prefer rainwater, which does not contain chlorine by-products like treated public water does

Deer Season with Food Safety in Mind - Alabama Cooperative Extension System 10/07/2021

Deer Season with Food Safety in Mind - Alabama Cooperative Extension System

Deer season opens Oct. 15. Mark Smith, a wildlife scientist with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, says hunters need a game plan to get venison from the field to the table safely.

“Hunters need a plan for managing heat, moisture and bacterial contamination,” said Smith. “Those are the big three factors that can cause meat to spoil.”

He said while there is no “right” way to field dress a deer, the bottom line is to choose a quick and efficient method that minimizes the exposure of meat to bacteria.

“Potential contamination sources include the animal’s rumen or other stomach material, f***s, urine and foreign debris such as dirt,” Smith said. “Remember bacteria naturally occurs just about everywhere.”

Supplementation Strategies for Cow Herds During the Winter - Alabama Cooperative Extension System 09/13/2021

Supplementation Strategies for Cow Herds During the Winter - Alabama Cooperative Extension System

Supplementation is defined as a part of a whole or, in the nutrition world, something that can be added to make up for a deficiency or complete the diet in beef cattle systems. When the forage base of a diet alone does not meet animal nutritional demands, additional supplementation is often required. Cows in most production systems require some form of supplementation during the winter in order to meet demands for pregnancy, lactation, and/or maintenance. Understanding animal nutrient requirements, forage nutritive value, and various winter supplementation strategies can help improve herd production and better optimize investments in managing annual cow carrying costs.
