Did you know...

Students who are highly involved in the arts participate in more community service than students who are less involved in the arts.

That means dance education access doesn't just benefit the students directly participating... it benefits entire communities!

“Dance, for me, has always been instinct,” says Jacquelin Harris, a dancer at , in her “Why I Dance” essay for . “I lost my first tooth and tied my first shoe at the studio. I knew right away I was meant to be there, although I didn’t know it would be forever.”

Head to the link in the comments to read about how she channels that instinct to expand her understanding of humanity. 💖

Text: “Dance has been used to mourn, to celebrate, to honor, to protect, to repent, to bring hope, to transcend fear. I dance as a way to honor our ancestors, to tell stories of people whom, even if I have never met them personally, I have met through history.” —Ailey’s Jacquelin Harris

✨Celebrating Women's History Month at ADF! ✨
Hanya Holm (1893-1992) was a visionary pioneer of modern dance and a founding artist of ADF. Her revolutionary work in dance education and performance has shaped the art form for generations. In 1984, she was honored with the Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival Award at Duke University. 💫 Her innovative approach to movement and choreography continues to inspire dancers and artists today, leaving an unforgettable mark on the world of modern dance. 💃✨

As we continue to celebrate Hanya Holm during Women's History Month, let's take a moment to reflect on her incredible legacy⭐

Holm was a member of "The Big Four", the title of Bennington's founding faculty alongside Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, and Charles Weidman. Her most important contribution to the American Dance Festival at Bennington was "Trend". In contrast to the soul-searching works of Graham, "Trend" leapt skyward in its abstractions, seeking fresh, ungrounded ideas through pure movement. According to Alain Nikolais, "Trend was of heroic proportions...symphonic rather than psycho-dramatic."

The world is a better place when more people have access to quality dance education programs.

When dance education access increases, we allow more students the opportunity to grow their creativity, coordination, problem-solving, empathy, collaboration, responsibility, persistence, communication, grit, accountability, and JOY!

Support this by having conversations with your local school administrators about the value of dance education.
