Last June, Linda Rule completed the Solarize A Classroom Training through Georgia Youth Science and Technology Center. This professional learning experience provided her with engaging strategies and resources to help her sixth grade science students explore solar energy and its many environmental benefits.

Students investigated how solar energy can serve as a renewable energy source and examined the important role the sun plays in processes such as purifying and cleaning water. To deepen their understanding, students created a gnomon to track the sun’s movement across the sky. They also conducted hands-on investigations by taking temperature readings of colored water and different types of sand and soil to determine how color affects the rate at which materials heat and cool.

These interactive activities allowed students to connect scientific concepts to real-world applications while making science both meaningful and fun. Thank you to GYSTC for making these meaningful learning opportunities possible.

Sixth grade students recently had the opportunity to learn from Dr. Nate Lawres as he shared his knowledge of archaeology, human adaptation, and the impact of climate on cultures in Georgia. Students explored how people throughout history have adapted to changing environments and discussed the ways humans continue to adjust to the world around them.

Dr. Lawres, an Associate Professor at University of West Georgia, brought artifacts that gave students a hands-on opportunity to investigate how different cultures in Georgia adapted their lifestyles based on the environments in which they lived. We greatly appreciate Dr. Lawres for taking the time to provide such an engaging and educational experience for our students.
