Outreach education on topics of concern and interest for farmers, families, youth, and our community from the University of Kentucky and Kentucky State University. Through the University of Kentucky’s College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, the Cooperative Extension Service is a comprehensive educational outreach and engagement program. Our mission is to serve as a link between Carroll Count

y and the Commonwealth’s two land grant universities, University of Kentucky and Kentucky State University, to help people improve their lives through education focusing on their issues and needs. This grass-roots organization offers educational opportunities in the following program areas: Agriculture and Natural Resources, Family and Consumer Sciences, 4-H Youth Development, and Community and Economic Development. Please see our articles each week in The News-Democrat. The Extension Agents and Support Staff serving Carroll County are: Currently Vacant, Agriculture and Natural Resources; Cathy Jansen, Family and Consumer Sciences; Joyce Doyle, 4-H Youth Development; and Rhonda Welch, Administrative Staff Assistant. Agriculture and Natural Resources

The Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) program area provides informal education in agricultural production and environmental stewardship. From the full-time farmer to the everyday homeowner with a lawn, the ANR Agent delivers research-based information to all residents on a wide variety of topics including insects, crop and livestock production, farm management, and home gardening. Educational opportunities and trainings are available throughout the year, but local residents are encouraged to stop by the office to ask a question at any time. Farm and home visits can also be requested. Family and Consumer Sciences

The goal of the Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) program is to improve the quality of life for individuals and families. The FCS program’s core framework focuses on the most basic needs of food, clothing and shelter, while educational opportunities emphasize well-being through human development, parenting, resource management, nutrition, health and aesthetics. The FCS Agent is also the advisor to the Carroll County Extension Homemakers, a local volunteer organization that works to improve the quality of life for our families and community through leadership development, volunteer service, and education.

4-H Youth Development

4-H is the largest youth organization in America, serving young people ages 9 to 19. Seven curriculum areas are taught in the 4-H program: animal sciences, communications, family and consumer sciences, health, leadership, natural resources, and science, engineering and technology. Projects offered in these areas include shooting sports, speech and demonstrations, livestock, reality store, sewing, electricity, country ham curing and many more. All of our 4-H projects are hands-on and led by local volunteers, allowing 4-H’ers to “Learn by Doing” while also building leadership, citizenship, and life skills for the future. The Carroll County Cooperative Extension Service hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Telephone: (502) 732-7030. Website: http://ces.ca.uky.edu/carroll
