We completed yet another great Ohio CCW with Defensive Pistol course. Thank you to all of the students who gave up their day to gain the tools necessary to protect themselves and their families. You are the heros. Thank you to Mike McWhorter of Delta Defense for providing valuable information on how to navigate and survive the legal and financial challenges of a self-defense encounter. Our course is a complete curriculum that provides the tools you need. We don’t do the war story thing, just what you need to start your path to be your own first responder.

What are the odds?
In 2019, a mentally ill man drove 10 hours to a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, where he un-alived 23 shoppers and wounded 23 others in just four minutes without being stopped. He was later apprehended less than a mile away. In 2023, another shooting occurred next door at Cielo Vista Mall between what the media described as “random groups.” One person was un-alived and three others were injured. When the shooter aimed his weapon at innocent shoppers, a concealed-carry permit holder acted to stop him. The difference in the outcomes was that, this time, a good guy with the skill and the will to intervene was there to prevent further carnage.
You never know when “your” day comes. Are you trained and ready?

This is the Ohio Peace Officers Qualification target used by most law enforcement in the State of Ohio. The qualification consists of 7 timed stages with distances from 4’ to 50’. Stage times vary from 5 seconds to 12 seconds. The stages also include shooting 4 rounds strong hand and four rounds weak hand only as well as a slide-lock reload stage. This target shows a 100% score only using less than half of the target. This target was also shot from concealment with no warm ups or practice holster draws. This target was also shot using half of the allotted time.

There are plenty of qualifications to measure minimum competence that we could use but this course of fire is recognized in law enforcement and the courts. We recommend church security teams to well exceed the Ohio Police minimums. There are several ways to accomplish this such as reducing the target size, increasing the distance, reduce the time permitted per stage and raising the passing score to qualify.

The Illusion of Safety in “Secure” Spaces:
The ironic thing about the WHCD last week in DC was that the anti-self-defense journalists found out what it was like to hide under tables when the wolf shows up. While we don’t advocate for the Run Hide Fight protocol, they had nowhere to run fight or hide but under a tablecloth. This banquet was a pew-free zone and rightly so. However, there were dozens of protectors there primarily to protect dignitaries, not the attenders. Each cabinet member was assigned to their own security team. Outside of these events, our legislators, often have their own security details provided at no cost.

So, what happens to the everyday citizens when they are arbitrarily dis-pewed? Are there dozens of protectors there to watch over us at schools, churches, malls, government administration offices and the list goes on. Of course not! Many towns post arbitrary NO PEW signs in city parks, but you won’t see police present. The media was shocked that this guy from California could get a pew across the country and into DC since pews are all but banned in DC. They were horrified that the pew laws played no part in stopping the evil. The media was almost as shocked when the secret service couldn’t lock-down 1100 hotel rooms when most of the rooms were probably occupied by the attendees of their event.

At the security breach location there were more than 10 officers. Four looked like TSA officers there to work the metal detectors. All were within 5 steps of the metal detector. The attacker sprinted at least 9 full strides before even one officer saw him. We call this security theater. The illusion of safety. Even though things were not perfect, the attacker got stopped and in the end that is the goal, to neutralize the threat.

Yes, there are times when security dictates certain rules, but unless effective security can be on-site, we cannot and must not dis-pew those that are willing to stand in the gap to protect themselves and their loved ones when the wolf knocks on the door. How many journalists figured it out? We must be able to be our own first responders.

We had another great Ohio CCW with Defensive Pistol Course this past Saturday. Everyone did great and left better than they came. We never pack a class where students don't get individual training. We are teaching people how to carry a firearm and we take that seriously. Our next class is Wednesday April 15 where we are offering the NRA Basics of PIstol Shooting Ohio CCW Course. We just received word of an attack on the Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, today. From what we know by the Sheriff’s briefing was there was a lone actor that drove a vehicle into the facility. An armed church protector did engage with the attacker According to the Sheriff, no children or staff members were injured except for a security team member who was sent to the hospital for treatment but is expected to be okay.
Once again here we are, attacks on Houses of Worship. We get asked all the time why a church would need security. Many are shocked why a church, synagogue or mosque would need armed protectors. Is your facility protected? If not, why not? According to the Sheriff, this attacked was stopped by protectors already on the site. Just six weeks ago, an active shooter training was done at this same facility. They were ready, are you?
