Oh those tricky words with multiple meanings and multiple spellings! The best way I have found to teach these words is to add an action to the reading and spelling routine. Read the word and produce the action, spell the word, read the word and use action, spell the word, and read the word and use the action! Have a great day!

I teach the meaning as early as FIRST GRADE! They are proud they know the difference. During their sight word routine, they read the word, spell the word, read the word and spell the word. Then they HAVE to tell me the meaning. An arrow shows them it means a place, the little stick person shows them it means belonging to someone, and the “a” shows the missing letter in the contraction!
