A heartful goodbye from Diana. The community will miss her deeply.

08/06/2025

For the past 21 years it has been my privilege to serve as Orange Literacy’s Executive Director. I have witnessed the excitement of students accomplishing their educational and life goals - learning to read to their children, earning a GED, learning to speak English, use a computer or becoming a U.S. Citizen. I have worked with some of the most dedicated volunteers imaginable, many as tutors and Board members. And together with some of the most passionate team members imaginable - from full time program managers to dozens of AmeriCorps members, instructors, interns and work-study students, each bringing their own talents and experiences - we built a strong, flexible and responsive program. I appreciate so much the support we’ve enjoyed from so many generous and community minded donors, who understood that - to use an old cliche - a rising tide floats all boats.

It has been a pleasure, but it’s time to move on - to allow a new generation, with renewed energy and new talents to take over. I do it with confidence that the new team will create an even stronger program. And that those of you who supported me over the years, will continue to support them.

Thank you,

Alice Denson

In Her Own Words:

Orange Literacy is the road that led me to my goals. The goal I have achieved is my English has improved. My next goal is to get my GED degree. My teacher is the mirror in which I see myself.

My life before Orange Literacy wasn't easy. Orange Literacy gave me the material I need for my class and and my tutor helps me practice English to gain self-confidence.

My idea is to have a place like this in every county.

In their own words -

I am very grateful to Orange Literacy and everyone who contributes to make this possible. I am happy because thanks to my tutor, Lisa, I have been able to overcome my fear of speaking the English I am learning. She is very patient and a good tutor. It has been a great change for my son. He was shy before but now he likes going to class. I have no words to thank my son's teachers (Katreen, Marcela and Oliver) and Diana, who is always on top of everything. I can only say thank you for helping us integrate into society. I like being able to communicate with my classmates of other nationalities.
-Maria, Family Literacy student

Orange Literacy for me is something important to learn the English language. I feel good with my teacher. She has the skills and patience I need to learn. I know I haven't reached my goal yet but I hope I can. I want to share the experience that has been very helpful for my daughter to be able to socialize with teachers.

In Her Own Words -

I am looking forward to getting my GED. It's fun to learn. Before Orange Literacy, I watched tv which didn't feel healthy doing it every day.
