Have you made a catapult with your child? Although it requires some adult support, it’s well worth it for the play it encourages.

Swipe to see to see how my son set it up to use. This play lasted for days and and created some wonderful imaginative play.

When we’re not making art...

I love seeing all the ways people are taking this time to reconnect with nature! We’re doing the same and trying to slow down and enjoy the little moments. Feeling really excited and inspired to bring more nature into our art and more of our art into nature! @ Carpinteria, California

We found a dead bee in our yard the other day. River was curious so remembering we had a book with some information on bee anatomy, I quickly set this up for him.

We began by observing with the magnifying glass, taking note of where the stinger was.

Next River asked for his tweezers and I happily obliged. After identifying the various parts of the bee and discussing what type of bee it might be, I invited him to make a drawing. Scroll to see his observational drawing that also includes a beehive in a tree.

Remember that sweet pot from a few posts back? We gave our clay some time to dry and revisited it today. I simply set up a painting prompt tray for him and let him work on it as he liked. It turned out so lovely and what’s even sweeter is that he said it was for, “my little kitchen tools.” We found a great spot on a shelf and even added a few teeny tiny kitchen things inside together.

I’ve always been fascinated by kids interest in ideas of power. Right now my son loves the “bad guys” from Star Wars. His interest has been a great way to develop his love for books and art. We’ve read all his Star Wars books countless times and now he’s taken to drawing the characters and scenes on his own. It’s a very special thing to watch and encourage. It’s also a really easy prompt for parents to offer. Try simply placing a book with your child’s favorite character near some paper and drawing tools and see what happens.

Scenes from our self directed art space. Sometimes no direction is the best direction.

Each time I introduce my son to a new art material it goes in our art space. This way he is empowered to choose what he works on when the mood strikes.
