DCHS AVID AVID program grades 9-12 at Dundee-Crown High School in Carpentersville, IL Her answer was AVID, an academic elective.

"AVID began in 1980 by Mary Catherine Swanson, then-head of the English department at San Diego's Clairemont High School. The federal courts issued an order to desegregate the city's schools, bringing large numbers of inner city students to suburban schools. While applauding the decision, Swanson wondered how these underserved students would survive at academically acclaimed Clairemont High. But it's more than a program - it's a philosophy: Hold students accountable to the highest standards, provide academic and social support, and they will rise to the challenge" (avid.org).

💙 Alumni Day 2025 was a huge success! 💙

We were blown away by the incredible turnout and so grateful to our alumni who came back to share their stories, advice, and journeys. Your real-world insight truly inspired our current students and reminded them what’s possible beyond high school.

If you’re an AVID alum seeing this and want to stay connected, we’d love to have you involved in our AVID family.

Please take a moment to complete our alumni survey so we can stay in touch and create more opportunities like this in the future:

🎓Calling all Alumni! 🎓

We're asking for your completion of a short AVID alumni survey.

The purpose of this survey is:

To better understand how AVID has supported you after high school (college, career, and beyond)
To build an alumni directory so we can connect current AVID students with former students who are willing to share their experiences through guest speaking, panels, or mentorship
Your responses will help us show the long-term impact of AVID and create meaningful opportunities for current students to learn from alumni who have been in their shoes. Participation is completely optional, and you’ll have the chance to indicate whether you’re open to future involvement.
