SCC Distinguished Alumnus Paul J. Stankard passed away on October 6, following an extended illness. Paul parlayed a successful career in scientific glass technology into an extraordinary second career as a world-renowned artist, elevating the glass paperweight from craft to fine art through his detailed botanical designs.

For decades, Paul passionately supported his alma mater. With his wife Pat, he generously funded a scholarship and donated exquisite works of art to the SCC collection. Paul also helped create the SCC Glass Art associate in fine arts degree program, founded the International Flameworking Conference, taught courses and workshops, and much more. Always generous with sharing his wisdom, Paul was extremely proud and humbled that the world-class studio in the Samuel and Jean Jones Glass Education Center bears his name.

As a champion of the community college movement, Paul was thrilled to be named the first state-wide Community College Distinguished Alumnus by the New Jersey Council of County Colleges.

Paul’s legacy will live on through the generations he inspired and the countless lives he helped change – at Salem Community College and around the world. As a glass artist, author, lifelong learner, educator, mentor, philanthropist, collaborator and a friend to many, he was truly one of a kind.

We are thinking of his family during this difficult time.

Last week, the College held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its renovated Fitness Center in Davidow Hall. The facility, located on the mezzanine in the DuPont Fieldhouse, contains new weight-training and cardio equipment, as well as enhanced flooring.

The Center is now open to all students, as well as College employees. “This is just the first step to increased fitness and wellness on our campus,” said SCC Athletics Director Bob Hughes during the event.

The Center is open Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Student Community College welcomed staff from the New Jersey Council of County Colleges (NJCCC) to the Samuel and Jean Jones Glass Education Center on Sept. 23 for a team-building day.

The NJCCC’s Executive Director of Economic Mobility is SCC Distinguished Alumnus Dr. Jacob C. Farbman.

Participating students included Justin Doman, Lily Brenner and Kayla James, along with SCC graduate and instructor Katie Severance.

Our sincere thanks to the Woman’s Club of Penns Grove-Carneys Point for returning to campus yesterday to spruce up the green, tidying the raised garden beds for the fall and maintaining the colorful mums they planted last season. Beautiful job!

The Salem County Department of Health and Human Services will present a free flu clinic in Salem Community College’s Davidow Hall on Thursday, October 1, 3:30-7 p.m. No appointment needed.

All County residents ages 3 and above may receive a free seasonal influenza vaccine.

SCC students and employees may also receive the vaccine; they should bring their college ID.

SCC nursing students will assist with the vaccines. ☺️

PracticalNursing.org ranks Salem Community College’s Practical Nursing (PN) program first in New Jersey.

The 2027 rankings were determined by evaluation of the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) pass rate, cost and outcomes. The PN program was also ranked first in New Jersey in 2024.

SCC nursing graduates have consistently achieved high pass rates on the NCLEX-PN exam (state boards), the entryway to becoming licensed practical nurses (LPNs).

“The Salem Community College Nursing faculty and staff are exceptionally proud to be recognized as the #1 LPN program in New Jersey,” said Assistant Dean of Nursing Kristine Hunt. “This achievement reflects the dedication of our faculty, the hard work and determination of our students, and our shared commitment to excellence in nursing education.

“Our program consistently provides an affordable, high-quality education that prepares skilled and compassionate nurses to serve the healthcare needs of our local communities,” Hunt continued. “I am very proud of our faculty and all of our students that have excelled in our program to make this #1 ranking so special.”
