1970 ODH developed and operated the first paratransit system in the country,
Magic Carpet Transportation System. Although Magic Carpet is no longer in
existence it was the forerunner of the now existent paratransit system in
Allegheny County. ODH along with many other grassroots organizations have fought hard for accessible housing, for educational opportunities as well as for fair employment. We are proud of our participation in the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. However, we still have a lot of work to do. In a lot of ways we have only just begun. The ADA was just the beginning. There are some that think the ADA went to far and are trying to take some of these hard fought civil rights away. We need to
strengthen and clarify the ADA. Join ODH and help us keep disability issues in
the forefront of the American conscience. If we don't get the funding we risk
losing our ability to fully participate in the great American Experiment. If given the
opportunity, people with disabilities can play an important part in the future
growth of our republic. You don't have to have a disability to join us because
without the help of people without disabilities we would not have been able to
accomplish all that we have been able to accomplish. ODH owes its vigor to the
many people--able and disabled--who have joined it in orderto create an
atmosphere of acceptance and to promote opportunities for participation in all
areas of daily living--particularly in education, employment, housing, and
recreation. Please join us in the struggle for equal rights.
