📢 CRAFTON ELEMENTARY UPDATE | August 28, 2026

The Carlynton School District is providing the following update regarding the ongoing remediation and environmental assessment work at Crafton Elementary School.

Allegheny County Health Department Inspection Finds No Evidence of Mold

The District received the written findings today from an inspection conducted by the Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) on Thursday, August 27. The inspection was conducted in response to a complaint submitted to the Health Department.

The ACHD inspector examined Rooms 101–104, the Library, and Room 313. According to the inspection report, no violations were observed, and the inspector reported no evidence of mold or a musty odor in the areas inspected.

The District appreciates the Allegheny County Health Department completing the inspection and providing the District with the written findings.

Remediation Work Continuing Over the Weekend

Although the ACHD inspection findings are encouraging, the District is continuing the comprehensive remediation and environmental assessment process already underway.

Firewater Response continued removal and remediation work today in Rooms 101–104 and anticipates completing the removal of identified porous materials, including carpeting and ceiling tiles, by tomorrow afternoon.

Intertek PSI is scheduled to return Monday to conduct a follow-up assessment of Rooms 101–104 and provide recommendations regarding next steps, including whether additional environmental testing is warranted.

Rooms 101–104 Remain Isolated

Rooms 101–104 will remain isolated and will not be used by students or employees while this process continues.

Importantly, Intertek PSI's professional determination regarding the remainder of Crafton Elementary has not changed. The remainder of the school continues to be considered safe for occupancy by students and staff.

The health and safety of our students and employees remains our priority. The District will continue to rely on qualified environmental professionals, complete this process thoroughly, and keep our families informed.

Another update will be provided following Intertek PSI's assessment and professional recommendations.

Thank you for your continued patience and support.

The Carlynton School District continues to work closely with Intertek PSI, our environmental consultant, regarding environmental conditions at Crafton Elementary School.

Intertek PSI has advised the District that Rooms 101–104 should remain isolated while remediation and follow-up testing continue and that the remainder of Crafton Elementary is safe for occupancy by students and staff. Students and employees are not using Rooms 101–104 for normal activities.

Since the concern was identified, the District has implemented recommended corrective measures, including:

Restricting access to affected rooms
Addressing moisture and humidity conditions
Using industrial dehumidification and HEPA-filtered air-cleaning equipment
Completing professional cleaning and remediation
Conducting follow-up environmental testing

The District believes environmental testing information is most useful when laboratory findings are communicated together with the interpretation of the qualified environmental professionals evaluating the building. Airborne mold-spore data do not have a single health-based numerical threshold that, standing alone, establishes whether a particular space is “safe” or “unsafe.”

Once the current testing results are received and reviewed, the District will request an update that includes Intertek PSI’s professional interpretation of the findings, a summary of the corrective work completed, and the resulting recommendations regarding Rooms 101–104.

Crafton Elementary opened today with approximately 96% student attendance, and all employees were present except two who were on previously approved leave.

The health and safety of our students and employees remain our highest priority. We will continue to follow the guidance of qualified environmental professionals and provide our families and community with meaningful updates as additional information becomes available.

📢 Update on Environmental Testing at Crafton Elementary

The Carlynton School District continues to work closely with environmental professionals to address the humidity-related concerns identified at Crafton Elementary School. The health and safety of our students and employees remains our highest priority.

On August 20, Intertek PSI conducted follow-up airborne mold spore sampling throughout the school. Following its evaluation, Intertek PSI certified the school as safe for occupancy by students and staff, with the exception of Rooms 101–104, which will remain isolated while remediation continues.

Current and upcoming actions include:

• Continued use of industrial dehumidifiers, HEPA-filtered air cleaners, and air movers
• Commercial HEPA vacuuming of carpets in Rooms 101–104
• Removal of remaining porous materials identified for disposal
• Continued isolation and remediation of Rooms 101–104
• Additional environmental testing by Intertek PSI on Monday, August 24
• Continued follow-up testing and monitoring after the classrooms are certified for occupancy

Firewater Restoration, LLC also completed ULV cleaning on August 21 as part of the remediation plan.

The kindergarten schedule remains unchanged. Due to the regularly scheduled staggered start, the earliest the kindergarten classrooms will be used for instruction is Friday, August 28.

The District will continue to follow the recommendations of our environmental experts, monitor conditions, and take any additional corrective measures that are warranted. We remain committed to keeping our families, employees, and community informed throughout this process.

Crafton Elementary Environmental Testing Update | August 20, 2026

Carlynton School District is providing an update regarding environmental testing and remediation efforts at Crafton Elementary School.

After a humidity-related concern was identified earlier this week, the District acted promptly by restricting access to affected areas, cleaning and treating identified surfaces, adjusting HVAC operations, and bringing in independent environmental professionals.

Intertek-PSI conducted indoor and outdoor air quality testing throughout multiple areas of the building. Results received today identified elevated concentrations of Penicillium/Aspergillus group mold spores in Rooms 101, 102, 103, and 104 compared with the exterior sample. Other tested areas—including the second-floor library, Room 211, Room 313, and the cafeteria—did not demonstrate the same pattern of elevated indoor concentrations.

Out of an abundance of caution, Rooms 101–104 will remain restricted from student and employee occupancy. The District is working with Intertek-PSI and Firewater Restoration, LLC, and commercial dehumidifiers, HEPA-filtered air cleaners, and air movers remain in operation. Humidity levels in the affected rooms have already improved significantly.

The District has also requested additional professional guidance and follow-up air sampling before the affected classrooms are returned to normal use.

At this time, restrictions are limited to Rooms 101–104, and other areas of Crafton Elementary continue to operate normally. Meet the Teacher Night will be held as scheduled, with impacted teachers using alternate spaces. Next week's staggered kindergarten start will also proceed as planned using alternate locations.

We understand that environmental concerns can understandably cause concern for families. The District will not return the affected classrooms to normal use until the appropriate corrective work is complete and we have a professional basis for doing so.

The health and safety of our students and employees remains our highest priority. We will continue to keep families informed as additional information becomes available.
