We are a student-led engineering program from Round Top-Carmine High School in Fayette County, Texas, competing in the Solar Car Challenge, a national competition for high school students.

Are y’all ready for the day 5 recap?
Started the day on our cruiser challenge, which was a sight seeing tour to the Sherwood courthouse in Mertzon,Tx. It was a great day and we pushed hard to get as many miles as possible on those long west Texas roads. Our judge riding with us was another amazing person and very patient. The end of the race was on Hwy 67, and we trailered the car to Fort Stockton.
The Solar Car Challenge held a closing banquet at the Fort Stockton Convention Center and we had a wonderful meal and got to spend time with our team and new friends. We are still trying to take it all in!
Mrs. Kuecker- You may need to make some room in the trophy cabinet because we are bringing home some amazing hardware.
RTC Solar was awarded the Lockheed Martin Award for Engineering Excellence! Our efforts on day 5 paid off with completing the most miles for day 5 in our division (“the day trophy)! We finished 2nd in our division for the entire challenge! Other notable awards were an award to Peter Kieke named “The Order of the Solar Cell” presented to individuals, a commemorative Challenge coin presented to teams who display the spirit of the competition, and the daily challenge award (which is a pretty sweet high vis vest).
What are great way to celebrate a year of hard work and commitment!

Day 4 recap- is it really the 4th day on the road?
Started the day adding an exhaust fan to our rear trunk to help manage controller temperatures. Charging was working well, and we were able to get a few more miles than yesterday, but those hills were brutal. Today’s cruiser challenge was to “last minute shop for a birthday gift” because two of the judges/interns were celebrating their birthdays on the road with this crazy circus. The team rolled into the stop in Mason expecting a 15min rest stop, but stayed and shopped and ate and enjoyed their beautiful courthouse square while charging up the batteries. Found the perfect gifts! Also had the pleasure of meeting RTC alumnus Carol Lange who was waiting for us at the courthouse. Deep roots at RTC and the team certainly feels the love and support.
We made our way to Brady and were able to get a few more miles before the clock ran out on the day. Tomorrow we leave from San Angelo to Fort Stockton and hoping to apply everything we have learned so far to have a great day.

Another attempt at posting an update from Day 3, hope this one works….
The Iron Lion’s team gave us an unexpected and thoughtful gift. They won the daily milage trophy and gifted it to us as recognition of our effort as a first year team. We truly appreciate their encouragement.
The cruiser challenge for the day was to go through a drive though as you would in your normal car. Obviously that meant a Whataburger stop. Enjoyed watching airplanes at the morning rest stop in Burnet. Made our way to Fredericksburg and enjoyed spending time at the square. Really appreciate the RTC alumni who came by to see us It’s a small world when you’re from a small town.
We head west tomorrow and have our hats and sunblock ready!

Day 2 on the road…..We got the umbrellas out and it’s not even raining! Instant shade. Carried a dozen eggs in our trunk...

Day 2 on the road…..We got the umbrellas out and it’s not even raining! Instant shade. Carried a dozen eggs in our trunk without cracking, but I wouldn’t want to eat them. Got a hand full of miles and leaned a lot about the MPPTs used for solar charging and troubleshooting. We also learned that churches and schools have the safest parking lots to get off the road.
Thank you to our fan club and family for braving the heat to come out to the Dell Diamond. It was great to have support from the home front.
Installed an electric w***h on the trailer to make it easier to load car when we have to.

We are about to hit the road, but want to take a minute thank Palestine High School for being such accommodating and gracious hosts to all the teams. And we have some serious material organizing goals now.
