Many families in the disability community have found comfort, understanding, and hope in “Welcome to Holland” by Emily Perl Kingsley. This timeless piece uses the metaphor of an unexpected journey to describe the experience of raising and supporting a child with a disability.

Did you know California’s Advisory Commission on Special Education (ACSE) helps shape special education policy across the state? Established under federal and state law, ACSE advises the Governor, Legislature, State Board of Education, and State Superintendent on issues impacting students with disabilities, including student outcomes, family engagement, inclusive services, teacher preparation, and more. Made up of parents, individuals with disabilities, educators, and other stakeholders, ACSE meetings are open to the public, providing opportunities for community voice and engagement in California’s special education system.

Transitioning to adulthood can feel uncertain, but the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Section 504, the Americans with Disabilities Act, as well as available resources, help ensure our high school students begin preparing for a thriving and successful life after high school, no matter what that looks like.
