At Nature's Lab, learning happens through real-world experiences.
This week, our children had the opportunity to welcome the team from Atlas Disposal and get an up-close look at one of the vehicles that helps keep our community clean. The children observed the garbage truck in action, asked thoughtful questions, learned about recycling and waste management, and even had the chance to sit inside the truck and take photos.
Experiences like these help children connect classroom conversations to the world around them. By meeting community helpers, exploring how systems work, and learning about caring for our environment, children develop curiosity, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of how we all contribute to our communities.
A big thank you to Atlas Disposal for taking the time to share your knowledge and inspire our young learners. ♻️🚛💚

We love slowing down for a good book. 📚
Today, we welcomed a librarian who spent time reading with the children. It was wonderful to see everyone gathered together, listening, engaging with the stories, and enjoying a peaceful moment in their busy day.

Supporting young children takes a community.
The Young Children Priority One Committee of the Kiwanis Club of Carmichael works to support children from birth to age five by connecting with local organizations, educators, family support programs, foster care advocates, food assistance programs, public agencies, and community partners throughout the greater Carmichael area.
Through collaboration and community partnerships, the committee helps identify needs, strengthen resources, and support efforts that benefit young children and the adults who care for them.
As an organizational member of the Kiwanis Club of Carmichael, Nature's Lab is grateful to participate in these conversations and community partnerships. Supporting children from birth through age seven has always been central to our mission, making this work a natural alignment with our commitment to young children and their families.
We are grateful for the many individuals and organizations working every day to create strong foundations for children and families. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of our youngest community members.
Carmichael TK & Kindergarten Enrollment Now Open for August 🏡
Did you know Nature's Lab offers both Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten?
Many families are currently exploring their options for the fall. Some are learning they didn't get into the program they hoped for. Others are simply looking for a learning environment where their child can continue building confidence, friendships, independence, emotional intelligence, and a genuine love of learning.
At Nature's Lab, children spend much of their day outdoors exploring, asking questions, caring for animals, building relationships, and learning through meaningful hands-on experiences.
Families looking for a Carmichael TK, Carmichael Kindergarten, or nature-based alternative to traditional school settings often tell us they were searching for smaller groups, stronger relationships, outdoor learning, Spanish immersion, and more individualized support.
Our families often tell us they came looking for a school, but what they found was a community.
We currently have limited TK and Kindergarten openings available for August.

How do children develop focus?
Many adults assume children learn attention by being told to sit still.
We see something different.
Today, our preschoolers welcomed Save the Snakes for an engaging hands-on learning experience. Through stories, songs, observation, discussion, and gentle interactions with live snakes, the children explored habitats, safety, animal adaptations, and the important role snakes play in our ecosystems.
While they were learning about reptiles, they were also developing so much more:
🐍 Attention and focus 🐍 Self-regulation 🐍 Listening skills 🐍 Scientific thinking 🐍 Confidence 🐍 Respect for living things 🐍 Curiosity and wonder
At Nature's Lab, we believe focus develops through meaningful engagement, not through compliance.
When children feel safe, connected, and genuinely interested, they naturally practice longer periods of concentration, problem-solving, observation, and participation.
Thank you to for creating such a memorable experience and for helping our children deepen their understanding of the natural world.
This is what learning looks like when curiosity leads the way.

Blackberries are ready 🍇🐦
As we wandered through the garden, children carefully searched for ripe berries, compared colors and sizes, and talked about what they noticed. Along the way, they stopped to check on some very special visitors—our resident pigeons and their new babies—nestled quietly in one of our outdoor classrooms.
A child pauses to observe.
Another asks a question.
A teacher follows their curiosity.
Together they notice patterns, make predictions, practice patience, and build a connection with the living world around them.
One of the things we love most about outdoor classrooms is that learning doesn't have to be rushed. There is time to sit quietly, watch baby birds grow, listen to the breeze, taste a blackberry picked fresh from the vine, and simply be present.
When children spend their days surrounded by nature, animals, caring teachers, and space to explore, curiosity and learning naturally flourishes.
At Nature's Lab, we believe some of the best learning happens in classrooms don't have four walls.

Join Our Teaching Community
At Nature's Lab, we believe childhood should be rooted in wonder, connection, and nature.
We are currently welcoming applications from bilingual Spanish-speaking educators for the 2026–2027 school year, with opportunities for selected candidates to begin training this summer.
Our educators are more than teachers. They are guides, mentors, collaborators, and lifelong learners who believe that relationships come before worksheets, curiosity drives learning, and nature is one of the greatest classrooms.
We are looking for educators who:
🌱 Love working with children
🌱 Value kindness, respect, understanding, community, and curiosity
🌱 Thrive in outdoor learning environments
🌱 Build strong relationships with children, families, and colleagues
🌱 Believe learning happens through exploration, play, and meaningful experiences
Nature's Lab is not a traditional preschool, and we are not looking for traditional educators.
We are building a community of professionals who want to help children grow into confident, compassionate, curious human beings.
If our philosophy resonates with you, we'd love to hear from you.
Please send your resume and a brief note sharing why you'd like to join our teaching community.
