Congratulations to STEMpower Grant Awardee Ms. Shakir, 6th/7th Grade Science Teacher at Arcade Middle School!
We are excited to celebrate the impact of her Solar Carnival project, which brought solar energy and engineering design to life in the classroom in such an engaging and hands-on way.
Through this project, students explored how solar-powered carnival rides function while actively building, testing, and revising their own designs. Along the way, they were challenged to think critically, problem-solve, and make meaningful adjustments to improve performance. The iterative process helped students experience real engineering in action—learning through trial, error, and perseverance.
Most importantly, students walked away with a deeper understanding of solar energy concepts, the engineering design process, and the value of persistence when solutions don’t work the first time.
We’re grateful for educators like Shakir who create innovative learning experiences that inspire curiosity and build real-world STEM skills in the classroom.
🎓 Congratulations to Brenda Alcaide Navarro, Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SSAC) Student Scholarship Awardee!
Brenda has long held a passion for law, an interest that has continued to grow through meaningful hands-on experiences. Her involvement in mock trial began her freshman year at a courthouse-hosted program downtown, where she discovered her excitement for every part of the legal process, from finding evidence to building strong arguments.
She returned to mock trial again her junior year and experienced continued success, further strengthening her enthusiasm for the field. Brenda is especially drawn to the energy of advocacy and problem-solving, where she can see herself engaging in this work every day.
We are proud to recognize Brenda as a scholarship recipient of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council.
Congratulations, Brenda, and best wishes as you continue pursuing your passion for law and advocacy!
