🌟 CCS STAFF SPOTLIGHT 🌟 Meet Lauren Dunlap, Aleks Johnson, and Dr. Rhonda Peterson!

Ever wonder what our amazing CCS staff does over the summer? Last week, this incredible trio teamed up at the CCS District Office to facilitate “Building Thinking Classrooms”, a Summer Professional Development Event designed to educate, inspire, and support our educators! Here’s a little more about them:

- Meet Mrs. Lauren Dunlap, an Instructional Coach at Woodbrook Elementary! Now in her 11th year with CCS, Mrs. Dunlap works hand in hand with teachers to strengthen instruction and boost student learning. From one-on-one partnerships to facilitating professional development, she is dedicated to supporting our teachers and helping students succeed every single day.

- Meet Mrs. Aleks Johnson, our Math Strategic Intervention Instructional Coach! A dedicated member of the CCS family since 2005, Mrs. Johnson just wrapped up her 21st year with the district. In her role, she partners with teachers, coaches, and administrators to roll out evidence-based practices that help every student thrive in math. Whether she's leading coaching cycles or facilitating professional learning, she is all about giving staff and students the resources they need to succeed.

- Meet Dr. Rhonda Peterson, our Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment! A valued member of the CCS team since 2019, Dr. Peterson spearheads curriculum development, instructional materials selection, and professional learning for the district’s K–12 Math and Science programs. She partners with teachers, coaches, and administrators to ensure our academic initiatives meet the highest standards.

School doors might be closed for the summer, but our Carmel Clay Schools educators are still in session, sharpening their AI skills for the upcoming year!

Last week, our staff leaned into innovation at our "AI Awareness for Teachers" event. Teachers dove into the mechanics of artificial intelligence. They explored tools like Gemini and Google NotebookLM to enhance learning. Our educators also discussed data privacy and ethics to ensure secure, thoughtful decisions in the classroom. We invested in this training for our staff to ensure our teachers are fully prepared to guide students in using these powerful new technologies safely, correctly, and responsibly. We aim to keep classrooms innovative and prepared for the future. We are proud of our staff’s dedication to creating future-ready environments for our students!

School might be out, but our Carmel Clay Schools elementary teachers are still hard at work leveling up their classrooms!

This week, K-5 math educators leaned into professional development with the "Building Thinking Classrooms" framework. Our teachers explored innovative ways to shift from passive learning to active, deep mathematical thinking. They collaborated to implement vertical non-permanent surfaces, use strategic random groupings, and pair them perfectly with our Reveal Math curriculum. We are so incredibly grateful for our staff’s willingness to keep learning and growing, ensuring that our schools remain spaces of high engagement and deep thinking. Thank you for your passion, dedication, and commitment to our students' success!

After announcing this winter that Carmel High School had 23 Presidential Scholar Candidates, we are proud to share that five students have now advanced to the semifinalist stage for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.

Out of only 627 semifinalists nationwide, this is an incredible accomplishment and a reflection of the outstanding dedication and achievement of these students.

Carmel High School has had at least one U.S. Presidential Scholar every year since 2021, including both Indiana honorees in 2023. Congratulations to these exceptional Greyhounds!
