Team Spotlight: Meet Brenna Barnard, MA, LMHC! 🤍

Brenna is a trauma-informed psychotherapist and eating disorder specialist at Carmel Therapy Network. She works with teens ages 14 and older and adults experiencing eating disorders, body image concerns, trauma, anxiety, OCD, depression, and perfectionism.

Brenna believes therapy is most effective when clients are met exactly where they are. Her approach is compassionate, collaborative, and empowering, while also offering gentle challenges that support meaningful growth. She primarily draws from Internal Family Systems, integrating ACT, DBT & mindfulness-based therapy, narrative therapy, and other approaches based on each client’s individual needs.

Brenna is passionate about helping people move beyond simply surviving and begin creating lives that feel meaningful, connected, and aligned with their values. We are so grateful to have her expertise, warmth, and commitment to specialized care on the Carmel Therapy Network team!

Brenna provides in-person therapy at our Fishers and Carmel offices, as well as virtual therapy throughout Indiana. Brenna currently has a full caseload and is not currently accepting new clients.

Sharing this with Indiana’s eating disorder community: therapists, dietitians, physicians, treatment providers, advocates, and anyone invested in improving access to care.

Please take six minutes to watch this important voting and legislative PSA outlining policy initiatives expected during Indiana’s 2027 legislative session:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1AaDW1AddCyiNo3k9W6YkFv1vZ5l6O0eS/view?usp=sharing

Two key initiatives need our collective support:

• Indiana’s participation in the Dietitian Licensure Compact
• Legislation requiring insurance companies to provide meaningful coverage for eating disorder treatment

You do not need to be a member of the Indiana Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to participate in or benefit from this advocacy. These policies affect providers across disciplines—and, most importantly, the individuals and families struggling to access appropriate eating disorder care.

Links to pledge your support are in the comments. Please watch, sign, and share widely throughout Indiana’s eating disorder and healthcare communities.

One Friday morning last fall, writer Jessica Slice’s eight-year-old daughter Rose woke up with a sore throat. At first, it felt like a minor cold, but over the next few days, she started to change. First, her arms and legs would suddenly and uncontrollably shoot out in front of her. Not long after, Rose said she felt like she was “vibrating inside.” Within a week, she began to wail for hours on end, threaten to harm herself and others, and displayed severe motor control problems.

But multiple doctors denied there was any medical issue, telling Slice to bring Rose to a psychiatrist instead. “I don’t know how long our pattern of ER visits and outpatient referrals might have continued had I not texted a group of friends that evening to share Rose’s story,” Slice writes. “One friend — a doctor — texted back an idea: “Have you looked into PANS?”

PANS, or “pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome,” is a form of brain inflammation caused by infection that affects an estimated one in around 12,000 children every year. A reliable test for the disease is still elusive, so diagnosis currently hinges on developing sudden-onset OCD or restrictive eating and at least two out of nine concurrent symptoms, which include aggression, motor abnormalities, and sleep changes. But there’s widespread medical skepticism surrounding the condition, and funding for research is sparse.

Splice writes about her fight to treat Rose and speaks to PANS patients and medical experts about their experience with the disease, the struggle to diagnose it, and the vocal community of physicians actively opposing the disease’s recognition: https://nymag.visitlink.me/5FU0Va

Yesterday was a great day to learn! 🤍

Thank you, Emily Stucky, for presenting to the Carmel Therapy Network team about McCallum Place Eating Disorder Center. We appreciated learning more about the national resources available when clients need a higher level of care than what is available in Indiana.

McCallum Place is an eating disorder treatment center in St. Louis, Missouri, serving all genders ages 10 and older. They also offer a specialized program for athletes in recovery. We look forward to continuing to build our relationship with Emily and the McCallum Place team.

Thank you again, Emily, for sharing your knowledge and resources with us!
