Merry Christmas to everyone. I love this time of year when I am able to give my students the traditional present, as well as coming up with something new for Christmas. It makes me happy when each student learns a Chirstmas song and I hear how they played it for the family at Christmas.

You know you are doing it right and that the student understands everything they have learned, when a student you have been teaching for years, goes away for a few weeks, but is able to come back and jump right in and start learning a new piece with little effort.
I am so proud of each of my students. They all are making such great progress, even the ones who just started. I appreciate each one, no matter what level or the extent of his/her abilites.

How many times have you listened to a song and a picture pops into your head? Have you ever heard a story during a song that has no words?
Music can paint a picture or it can tell a story. As I teach my students I ask them if they can hear what is going on in the piece. Sometimes you don't always hear it, but more often you can. The 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky is an excellent example of hear a story being told. Listen to the end especially, you can hear cannons being fired. Blue Bird by Alexis French also paints a picture. You could envision a ballerina dancing around or possibly see a bird fluttering around. Another good example is The William Tell Overture. What do you hear?

Making Music Fun
I am so excited about this. I just completed a project for my youngest students. I use color to help them learn to read and find notes. While using color to learn to read notes is nothing new, I found this idea online. So I made this keyboard out of felt, then cut out the colors for each note and then made the bean bags to go with it. Eventually I will take away the colors and have them toss the bean bags to the correct notes. Playing and learning, I love it!

Over the years I have enjoyed watching my students develop their skills and watched them learn new and challenging pieces for their level. I have also seen them each year maturing. One way I have seen them maturing is the fact that when they take on a new piece, no matter how frustrated they might get, they push through and learn it. I don't take any credit for that. They did it. They were determined. I get to watch and enjoy it. I am so thankful I can be there to witness it

What makes teaching piano exciting for me? It's giving my student the tools and knowledge to be able to read music and understand how to play. Helping them to understand the basics and then teach them more, watching them grow and seeing their talent develop.
