“Knocking down the barn door”
Angled gedan barai that appear in kata such as Seiyunchin and Suparinpei are designed to deliver whole body weight transfer - as demonstrated in this video. With this in mind foot then arm (step then ‘block’), while possibly an intermediary step, should be quickly rejected in favor of foot and arm together.

When teaching Tensho kata at seminars or to our GKCglobal members (many of whom learned tensho from Higaonna Morio Sensei’s lineage) they are often completely unfamiliar with Tensho beginning with punches as in Sanchin kata - as was I. It was when I trained under Miyazato Eiichi Sensei at the Jundokan dojo Okinawa that I was first introduced to this method.
In the video Higaonna Sensei, who began his training at the Jundokan, is performing Tensho this way also.

Kata arranged in list form gives the impression of a start and end point, and an order of hierarchy. The wheel format illustrates that all kata are intrinsically related to, and governed by, Sanchin. There is a beginning point for the neophyte, but for the seasoned practitioner the journey is circular; the beginning forgotten, an end point nonexistent.
