Waddle, Waddle Belly flop, it's Penguin Week! Yes, the children slid on their bellies this week during music & movement time :0). We practiced waddling and trying to move with an egg between our legs. The children learned that the "daddy penguin" keeps the egg warm while the "mom penguin" leaves to get food. The students also learned that penguins are actually birds that don't fly and they hatch from eggs. These concepts and more were reinforced throughout the week.
"P" was our letter focus and there were Penguin activities that focused on fine motor skills (our feed the Penguin), memory, colors, taking turns, and 1-1 correspondence (2 penguin games). Additionally, there is a sensory Penguin play area, and our igloo filled with penguins, icebergs, magnetic fish, and fishing poles for dramatic play.
We continue to work on our fine motor skills during art, cutting to create a penguin mosaic art. During Science we tried to answer how Penguins stay warm and mostly dry swimming in the icy waters? There were 2 penguins. One drawn with pen and not colored, the other colored with oil pastels and crayons. The students loved using spray bottles to wet the penguins. We talked about the amount of feathers penguins have and that their feathers contain an oil that "pushes the water away." The children also rescued penguins from frozen blocks of ice using salt, warm water, and tools. Another time it was pure sensory play with ice cubes, water, penguins, spoons, and other water play items.
