New Queer South, edited in collaboration with Guest Editor Alice Parrinello (University of Toronto), offers a timely and intellectually rigorous exploration of queer and transfeminist approaches to Southern Italy.

The Themed Section brings together theoretical, historical, literary, cinematic, and sociological perspectives that challenge long-standing narratives of marginality and “backwardness.” Invited Perspectives further expand the issue’s dialogic scope through contributions by leading scholars of queer meridionalità alongside original visual artwork commissioned specifically for the journal.

Open Contributions widen the lens even further, offering comparative and cross-disciplinary interventions that move beyond the theme and strictly Italian frameworks.

New this issue: Continuing Discussions now follows a rolling-publication model. New articles will appear online as soon as they are ready—so we invite you to check back often as the conversation continues to grow over the coming weeks and months.

After months of research, writing, and collaboration, I’m thrilled to share the release of the new issue of gender/sexuality/italy: Conservative Feminism / Femminismi di destra. This issue stems from the first American Association for Italian Studies - AAIS Giornata di Studio "1922-2022: Italy one hundred years later. Femminismi di destra" on January 27, 2023, organized and curated by Ombretta Frau, Mount Holyoke College. Since then, Ombretta Frau and Juliet Guzzetta have joined forces as guest editors of the Themed Section of g/s/i. I am grateful for being part of this editorial effort. It has been a deeply challenging yet rewarding journey, diving into the fascinating (and often contradictory) intersections of feminism, conservatism, and right-wing ideologies in Italy and beyond.

This issue sheds light on the nuances and contradictions of conservative feminism, from its historical roots to its modern manifestations in figures like Giorgia Meloni, uncovering how right-wing movements redefine (or distort) feminist ideas. It spans topics as varied as Anna Franchi’s activism, Futurist genealogies, femonationalism and Marian symbolism, the complexities of Eugenia Roccella’s motherhood discourse, and even the unexpected intersections of politics and fantasy literature with Eowyn.

The richness of this issue, however, extends far beyond the themed section. The journal features Invited Perspectives, with an illuminating conversation with Dacia Maraini, Flavia Perina, Marina Terragni, and Natasha Edirippulige Fernando on Giorgia Meloni’s Italy.

This is not just an academic endeavor—it’s an invitation to engage in critical conversations about how feminist language, symbols, and identities are being redefined, co-opted, and contested in contemporary society.

Collaborations and Open Contributions offer new insights into Italian culture, such as the reimagining of The Decameron as a feminist genesis and a compelling exploration of the Gender Bender Festival. Additionally, the Book Reviews and Film, Theater, and TV Series Reviews sections examine works that span historical, ecological, and screen studies, including pieces on Mina’s stardom, feminist filmmaking, and contemporary TV series like White Lotus and Prisma.

A huge thank you to the guest editors Ombretta Frau and Juliet Guzzetta, who co-curated the Themed Section and, with Paola Bonifazio, the Invited Perspectives. Thanks to all the brilliant contributors and to the g/s/i collaborators who made this possible, particularly Colleen Ryan, Leonardo Cabrini, Ellen Nerenberg, Lisa Dolasinski, Samantha Gillen, and the Assistant Editors Beatrice Basile, Deion Dresser, and Katherine Travers.

On November 27, 2023, the Queer Caucus at the American Association for Italian Studies (AAIS) organized and facilitated a roundtable discussion focusing on trans identity and trans activism in Italy, featuring Egon Botteghi, Cristina Leo, Leila Pereira, and Marte Pezzatini. The event served as a follow-up to the caucus’s earlier giornata di studio on Trans Studies held on November 17th. During the conversation, the speakers shared firsthand perspectives from their respective territories and communities, shedding light on the intricate social and political challenges and joys faced by the trans community in contemporary Italy.
