Parents usually come to a placement test with something specific: a math grade, a reading level, or a teacher’s comment.

We talk about that. But sometimes, as they’re getting ready to leave, another question comes out:
Is it too late? Did I miss something? Should I have started sooner?

If one of those questions sounds familiar, you’re not the only parent carrying it.

A gap in learning isn’t a verdict about your child. It tells us there’s a place in the foundation that needs more attention. And gaps can stay hard to see until the work becomes more demanding. Noticing one now doesn’t mean you should have known about it years ago.

At a placement test, I’m listening for both things: what the work shows me, and what the parent is worried it means. Both matter.

There are two versions of Tuesday night at 7:30.

In the first one, the homework has been open for an hour. You have explained the same problem three different ways. Bedtime is getting close, and nothing is resolved. Everyone at the table is tired, and everyone is pretending not to be upset.

In the second one, the homework took twenty minutes. Your child finished it before dinner. Nobody is dreading anything. Tuesday night is just Tuesday night.

Most of the parents I talk to are living in the first version. Some of them have started to wonder whether the second one is real, or something other families just say on Facebook.

It is real. And the gap between the two is where I spend most of my time.

Here is what I want you to know. The difference is not effort. Your child is trying. You are trying. The difference is not intelligence either.

The problem is not that your child can't do the work. It is that the foundation the work sits on isn't solid yet. Until it is, every new assignment lands on top of the gap, and Tuesday night at 7:30 stays the same.

That is a fixable problem. It just isn't fixed at 7:30 on a Tuesday.

Kindergarten readiness checklists can make parents feel as if they need to teach every letter, number, shape, and color before September.

But knowing what’s on the list is only part of being ready. A child also needs practice sitting down, getting started, following directions, and staying with something until it’s done.

That’s a habit, not a box to check.

At Kumon of Carle Place, we build it through small, manageable work at a regular time each day. For our youngest students, that might mean tracing, pointing, counting, or recognizing words. The work grows with the child; the habit grows with them.

And this isn’t only about kindergarten. The same habit helps a third grader start homework and a middle schooler try a hard problem before looking for an adult.

The material changes every year. The ability to sit down, start, and stay with it carries over.

In October I will be posting the 2026 3rd Quarter Advanced Student Honor Roll at my center. Bronze. Silver. Gold. Platinum.

Last quarter, a second grader walked in, saw her name on the list for the first time, and did not walk away.

No dramatic quarter. No moment when everything suddenly clicked. Twenty minutes at a table, five, six, seven days a week, for six months. No shortcuts.

That is what dedication looks like at seven years old.

What if one of the best things you could do for your child's future brain wasn't another class, another app, or another activity — but simply help them become a reader?

Researchers at Cambridge just analyzed data from more than 10,000 young adolescents in the U.S. ABCD study. They found that children who established a habit of reading for pleasure early in childhood scored higher on cognitive tests, showed lower rates of psychopathology and impulsivity, spent less time on screens, and had measurable differences in the parts of the brain associated with attention and memory — visible on MRI a decade later.

A child who reads twenty minutes a day, every day, is a reader by the time they are ten. Not because someone told them to be. Because it is what they do.

The twenty minutes on any single Tuesday is not the point. What a hundred Tuesdays produce — that is the point.

If homework keeps ending with an adult sitting beside your child, you’ve probably tried the same things most thoughtful parents try.

First, you wait. Maybe it will get easier with time.
Then you help. You sit down together, explain the steps, and get tonight’s page done.
Then you try a tutor. The homework gets done more calmly—but your child may still be waiting for an adult whenever the work gets hard.

None of that means you did anything wrong. It means finishing the page and changing the pattern are two different jobs.
At Kumon, we work on the second one. We find a starting point your child can handle independently, adjust the work as they grow, and build a daily habit of sitting down and figuring things out.

The goal isn’t just to finish tonight’s homework. It’s a child who can start tomorrow’s without someone beside them.
