🌎 *Snack Tectonics!* 🌎

Ms. Rebekah's Earth Science got a little messy—and a lot more delicious—today!

Students used Fruit Roll-Ups, graham crackers, and icing to model the movement of Earth’s tectonic plates. By pushing, pulling, and sliding their “plates,” they were able to see what happens at convergent, divergent, and transform boundaries.

One of our models used two graham crackers pushed toward one another to demonstrate a convergent boundary. As the “plates” collided, the crackers buckled and pushed upward, helping students visualize how plate movement can contribute to mountain formation.

It was a fun, hands-on way to take something that happens deep within the Earth and make it a little easier to see, understand…and apparently cover in icing.

Learning is always better when you can eat the evidence! M

🦅 EAGLE ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Where Are They Now?

This week's spotlight is a little extra special! We're catching up with Austin Nolan, a member of the Class of 2016 — SCA's very first graduating class!

⚙️ Career:
Austin is currently a Machinist at Moore's Machine Shop.

❤️ Family Life:
Austin is married to the former Mallorie LeBeouf, his grade school sweetheart. They now live in the Mire community with their two four-legged babies—Goose, their Lab, and Ollie, their Maltipoo.

🍎 Favorite Teacher:
Now, his favorite teacher SHOULD be his mom... but I have my doubts that's the answer he would give. 😂

💬 Advice for Current Students:
"You will miss the school schedule when you're in the workforce—enjoy it now."

❤️ It's hard to believe it's been 10 years since SCA celebrated that first graduating class. Watching those students grow up, build careers, get married, and create lives of their own makes those early years of SCA even more special.

And yes, I'm proud of all of our graduates... but I might be just a tiny bit partial to this one. ❤️🦅

We began with a whole-school Bible lesson grounding the day in biblical principles of citizenship, leadership, justice, and responsibility. Constitution Day at Summit then moved beyond a traditional history lesson as students in grades 7–12 rotated through five interdisciplinary stations examining the U.S. Constitution from different perspectives.

In Mathematics, students used population data and proportional reasoning to explore representation and the problem that led to the Great Compromise.

In English, they analyzed how precise constitutional language—such as shall versus may—can alter meaning, authority, and individual protections.

In Civics, they applied separation of powers and checks and balances to determine how the Constitution distributes and limits governmental authority.

In Science and History, students connected the Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment to the founding era, using experimentation and problem solving to consider how observation, reason, testing, and revision can expose weaknesses in a system. They then connected that process to the transition from the Articles of Confederation to the Constitution.

Finally, students stepped into the Constitutional Convention of 1787, examining the delegates’ difficult decisions and compromises involving representation, executive power, individual rights, and slavery.

Rather than simply memorizing facts, students calculated, analyzed, interpreted, debated, problem-solved, and drew conclusions about why the Constitution was created, how it was designed, where it fell short, and why its structure remains significant. Their performance on the cumulative assessment demonstrated that they did exactly that.

This is what interdisciplinary learning can look like in a small-school setting: five teachers, five academic perspectives, and one complex subject examined in depth.

🦅 EAGLE ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Where Are They Now?

Today we're catching up with Ava Guidry, a proud member of the Class of 2023!

🔬 Education & Career:
After graduating from SCA, Ava attended SLCC's Medical Lab Science program and is now working behind the scenes in the medical field, testing blood and other body fluids to help doctors diagnose and treat patients.

🎓 Favorite SCA Memory:
"Doing the Rube Goldberg project!"

🍎 Favorite Teacher:
"All of them ❤️"

💬 Advice for Current Students:
"Dress like an Eskimo before entering Mr. Josh's class.

❤️ We love catching up with our former Eagles and seeing all the different paths they've taken after SCA. Ava, we're so proud to see you putting your education to work in such an important field—and apparently some things at SCA never change... like needing a winter coat for Mr. Josh's classroom! 😂.

There’s still something powerful about simply reading a good book together.
Reading novels aloud helps students build vocabulary, improve comprehension and fluency, and hear the rhythm and expression of strong writing. It also gives us opportunities to stop, discuss, ask questions, and make sure everyone is following along.
Sometimes the best classroom technology is still a good book and a voice.

Happiest of birthdays to our very own Mr. Josh. Wishing you a blessed day!! Love your SCA family ❤️💙⚾️
