A love story that started at SIU is now part of campus forever!

SIU alumni Nick and Amanda Martin returned to campus during Homecoming week to dedicate "Coalesce," a new heart-shaped sculpture outside the Agriculture Building, where their own love story began.

The Martins met as students at SIU, built a life together and are celebrating their 18th wedding anniversary this weekend. The dedication also marks another meaningful anniversary for their family: the phone call that changed their lives forever, when they learned their daughter, Miracle, would be joining their family. Now, with Miracle by their side, they hope the sculpture becomes a special place for generations of Salukis to celebrate the friendships, connections and love stories that began at SIU.

"SIU gave us so much more than an education," Amanda said. "It gave us lifelong friendships, an incredible community and, most importantly, each other."

In Season 2, Episode 3 of The Impact Report, we’re celebrating the legendary teams, unforgettable moments and rich history of Saluki Athletics!

SIU Foundation CEO Matt Kupec is joined by SIU Director of Athletics Tim Leonard at the Tedrick Welcome Center to discuss an exciting fall for Saluki Athletics, including a nationally televised Homecoming football game against Illinois State on ESPN.

The conversation also looks back at some of the teams that helped shape SIU’s athletic legacy. From the historic 1966-67 NIT championship basketball team and the 1977 baseball team that reached the College World Series to memorable Missouri Valley Conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances, there is plenty of Saluki history to celebrate.

As SIU prepares to recognize these legendary teams and their milestones, Leonard reflects on the responsibility of carrying forward a tradition built by generations of student-athletes and coaches.

It’s an exciting time to celebrate where Saluki Athletics has been and look ahead to what’s next. Congratulations to all the teams and athletes being honored this fall!

As alumni, friends and community members return to campus for SIU Homecoming, we invite you to explore one of the university's newest landmarks. Whether you're visiting for the first time or returning to see more, this is a great opportunity to experience all the Tedrick Welcome Center has to offer.

Opened in May 2026, the 44,000-square-foot facility serves as a welcoming gateway to SIU and the new home of the SIU Foundation. The facility was funded through Foundation resources and philanthropy, including a $6 million leadership gift from Roger and Sally Tedrick, without taxpayer dollars, tuition, student fees or state funding.

Explore the state-of-the-art facility, featuring interactive displays that showcase SIU's academic programs, student experiences, traditions and achievements. Discover the innovative technology and experiences designed to connect prospective students, alumni and visitors with everything that makes SIU special.

We look forward to welcoming alumni, friends and community members to this exciting new space during Homecoming! A variety of food and refreshments will be available while supplies last.

In Season 2, Episode 3 of The Impact Report, we’re taking you to Champaign, Illinois, where the Saluki spirit was on full display during the 6th Annual Saluki Takeover Tour!

More than 175 SIU alumni and supporters gathered at The Venue CU in downtown Champaign for the Chancellor’s Reception, reconnecting with fellow Salukis, celebrating their shared memories and hearing the latest updates from SIU.

Chancellor Austin A. Lane and his team also visited area high schools to connect with prospective students. During the reception, university leaders welcomed high school seniors who have already committed to becoming Salukis and highlighted SIU’s recognition as both a Research 1 and Opportunity University, a distinction held by only 21 universities nationwide.

The celebration continued into the weekend as the Saluki football team took on the Illinois Fighting Illini. Nearly 1,000 alumni joined the SIU Alumni Association for a spirited tailgate before the game, bringing plenty of maroon pride to Champaign.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this Saluki Takeover Tour stop so memorable. Whether reconnecting with old friends or welcoming future Salukis, the weekend was a reminder that the Saluki community extends far beyond Carbondale.

In Season 2, Episode 3 of The Impact Report, we’re celebrating the generosity of Salukis everywhere during the SIU Foundation’s first Week of Philanthropy!

The week brought the SIU community together to recognize the impact of giving, including the 11th annual SIU Day of Giving. SIU Credit Union helped kick off the celebration with a $35,000 gift supporting new student programs and the Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center.

This year’s Day of Giving theme, “Paint the Map Maroon,” challenged Salukis to make a gift from all 50 states, and our supporters answered the call!

As part of the celebration, SIU Foundation scholarship recipients gathered at the Tedrick Welcome Center to write postcards thanking the donors who have made a difference in their education. Students also shared how scholarship support has helped them pursue their goals at SIU.

A heartfelt thank you to SIU Credit Union and every Saluki who participated in the Week of Philanthropy. Your generosity is creating opportunities for students and helping build a stronger future for SIU.

The Saluki spirit was alive and well in Atlanta!

The 6th Annual Saluki Takeover Tour kicked off in Atlanta, Georgia, bringing together more than 200 alumni, donors, university leaders and friends of SIU for the Chancellor’s Reception at SweetWater Brewing Company.

From reconnecting with former classmates to meeting fellow Salukis for the first time, the evening was filled with familiar faces, new friendships and plenty of Saluki pride.

SIU Chancellor Austin A. Lane and SIU System President Dan Mahony joined the celebration, sharing updates on SIU’s continued momentum and the university’s efforts to expand its reach in Georgia.

Beyond the reception, SIU leaders spent four days visiting schools, meeting with educators and community partners, and building connections to help more Georgia students discover opportunities at SIU.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Atlanta and helped make our first Saluki Takeover Tour stop in Georgia such a success!

Enrollment is on the rise at Southern Illinois University Carbondale!

In Season 2, Episode 3 of The Impact Report, we celebrate a major milestone as SIU's fall 2026 enrollment reaches 12,066 students, a 2.4% increase over last year and the first time enrollment has surpassed 12,000 in eight years!

Even more exciting, the number of new undergraduate students from Southern Illinois increased by 24%, reflecting the university's commitment to recruiting students throughout our region.

Under the leadership of Chancellor Austin A. Lane, SIU continues to expand its reach through local high school visits and national engagement efforts, including the SIU Foundation's Saluki Takeover Tour.

Thank you to our alumni, donors and supporters who continue to invest in SIU and help create opportunities for the next generation of Salukis!
