We are a teeny bit obsessed with all things the and we know you are too, so get ready for the upcoming lunar eclipse! A partial will be visible across the US, Mexico, and Canada on 11/19 at 1:30 am CT. This will be the longest partial eclipse of the century! 🤯
Share this with your friends so they can get in on this captivating celestial event too! 🌕🌗🌑
11/04/2021
Early on the morning of Friday, November 19, most of the country including our region in S. Illinois will see a very high percentage partial or “Almost Total Lunar Eclipse,” as it is being referred to by NASA. This partial eclipse will reach 99% or almost total obscuration at 3:03 am local time (CT).
A lunar eclipse is a great opportunity to see all phases of the Moon in one evening. The Moon will start out appearing full, then you will slowly see the Earth’s shadow cast upon it starting at 1:18am. Over the next few hours, the illuminated part of the Moon becomes smaller and eventually only a very small amount, just under 1% of the lunar disk will be illuminated. The effect is that most of the Moon will then appear with an orange – red hue similar to a total lunar eclipse. As the Earth’s shadow moves across the Moon, it will eventually become full again at 4:47 am. The lunar eclipse is a great opportunity to view the Moon through binoculars or a small telescope. As the Earth’s shadow moves across the moon, you will be able to see the peaks and valleys of craters with greater contrast and detail.
If you do get out to see the lunar eclipse, keep in mind that you have to watch for more than a few minutes to see the shadow progress. You won’t be able to see it move as you look at it, but will notice the shadow progressing slowly over 5 to 10 minutes.
For more information, and to view an online simulation by Ernie Wright of what the lunar eclipse will look like, see the article, “November 19, 2021 Almost Total Lunar Eclipse,” at
SVS: November 19, 2021 Almost Total Lunar Eclipse
On November 19 (late evening of the 18th in some time zones), the Moon passes into the shadow of the Earth, creating a partial lunar eclipse so deep that it can reasonably be called almost total. At the moment of greatest eclipse, at around 9:03 a.m. Universal Time, 99.1% of the Moon's disk w...
