Rob Hahn, Professor of Philosophy, checks in from Greece.
Just a quick hello from our 39th annual programs. This program — including Greece, Greece & Turkey, Egypt, and even Italy — is the 65th program I have led in 39 years!
I completed leading our Egypt program in December.
By combining visits to archaeological sites and museums with hands-on activities — in Greece, and different for Egypt — such as recreating the trial of Socrates from our translation of Plato’s Apology as part of our exploration of their invention of democracy and the jury system, making sundials on the beach as part of our introduction to ancient astronomy, making some pottery at a local workshop to explore changing designs of ceramics, running an Olympic footrace in an ancient stadium as part of our exploration of their invention of the Olympic Games, organizing debates about the origins of philosophy in Greece to try to understand how ratiocination competed and challenged mythic explanations, and performing an ancient play in an ancient theater with costumes and masks we make ourselves as part of our exploration of their invention of the theater…we have tried to make serious learning fun!
Here’s to our 40th annual programs to Greece and Egypt next May and June 2023 !

Big news. Languages, Cultures and International Trade now offers a new minor: a MINOR IN MYTHOLOGY.
It's very straightforward: simply take 5 courses — any 5 courses — from the list below.
The new Minor can be officially added starting this Summer/Fall. And naturally, courses that you’ve already taken can count towards it.
We've been working on this Minor for quite a while, so its recent approval is cause for celebration. All the more so because very few North American universities offer anything comparable. Make yourself part of the legend!

LCIT faculty member Dr. Mont Allen and the rest of his team of collaborators here have won a $100,000 NEH Humanities Connections Grant.
The grant is awarded for a novel interdisciplinary project designed to draw non-Humanities students (especially STEM students) into concurrent study of the Humanities. It is highly competitive: of 51 proposals submitted, the NEH funded 4 (an 8% funding rate).
Dr. Allen's project will see the creation at SIU of a new *Minor in Ancient Practices*, a course of study with few precedents or equivalents at any North American university.

Hardened
Written, compiled, and directed by Rebecca Walker
Victim. Monster. Myth. Her infamous face adorns warrior's shields, Renaissance paintings, and even one modern fashion label. The story of Medusa spans generations, and over theyears she has morphed from innocent to villain to icon. Her ability to turn men to stone is unquestioned; yet, have we ever asked why she'd want to? Hardened explores the myth of Medusa, from her snakelike properties to the mystery of her motivations. Join us as we slither deep into Medusa's lair, and listen closely as she hisses her final question...what hardens you?
